Fox Sports 1 Quick Picks

Avila is undefeated but still relatively unkown
Manuel Avila vs. Enrique Quevedo: Fox Sports 1 has done a good job of giving fans fight cards during the week, usually on Monday's and Thursdays.  Those fights usually fall into two categories, a crossroads fights with two fighters needing to make a big statement, or a showcase fight for a young pugilist looking to move up in the sport.  This Monday's main event falls into the latter category.  The fighter being showcased is the undefeated Manuel Avila (13-0, 5 KO) as he takes on Enrique Quevedo (15-6-1, 9 KO) in a featherweight fight scheduled for 10 rounds.  Avila is an interesting fighter, he is only 21 years old but he is very poised in the ring.  Although his power is limited he still throws punches with bad intentions and has above average hand speed.  If Avila has any glaring flaws it is his defense, he gets caught upstairs way to often but he does have a very good chin so he has never been down as a professional.  Avila isn't always the most active fighter, he chooses to pick his spots but when he unleashes he usually does so with exciting combinations.  It's clear that Avila's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, wants to give him a bigger stage to impress on.  He will try to do so against Quevedo.  Quevedo isn't a very skilled fighter and should try to make things messy on the inside with clinches and short punches.  The only real advantage Quevedo has over Avila is experience.  Quevedo has fought many times in 10 and 12 rounds bouts while this fight will only be Avila's second scheduled to go 10 rounds.  If Quevedo can make this fight sloppy and frustrate the young Avila he may be able to pull off the upset but it isn't likely.  I'm expecting Avila to win this fight fairly easily by the way of unanimous decision.

Mendez is coming off a very disappointing draw
Paul Mendez vs. Raul Casarez: The co-feature on Monday's card will feature on fighter looking for a big win after a disappointing draw and another looking to prove he still belongs.  The fighter looking to rebound after a draw is Paul Mendez (14-2-2, 6 KO) while the pugilist looking to stay relevant is Raul Casarez (20-4, 9 KO) as they face off in a 10 round, middleweight bout.  Mendez has had a quirky career both of his losses came early as a professional as was his first draw.  After that first draw he went on to win seven fights in a row before his most recent fight also ended in a draw.  For a fighter like Mendez without a big following a loss, or another draw at this point in his career could be disastrous.  Mendez does have the talent to be a real threat in the sport though.  He has a very good jab and his subtle head movement really frustrates his opponents.  Casarez will do his best not to be frustrated by the slicker Mendez.  Casarez's career is in jeopardy if he losses this fight.  He is only 27 but already has four losses and three of them have been by knockout, perhaps none more spectacular than when Alfredo Angulo destroyed him in the 1st round of their fight.  But the other problem for Casarez is that he doesn't carry a lot of power.  If he were a fighter who got knocked out but also scored some impressive stoppages of his own he might be a fan and TV favorite, but that isn't the case.  Mendez doesn't have much power either but his promoter might have chosen for him to fight Casarez so he can look impressive and possibly score a big knockout since Casarez's chin is so terrible.  I don't expect Mendez to end this fight with a knockout but he will win the fight by unanimous decision.
