UniMas Quick Picks

Antonio DeMarco vs. Jesus Gurrola: Saturday night on UniMas should provide fans with some good action fights.  The main event, which has the chance to be brutal, in a good way, features the well known Antonio "Tony" DeMarco (29-3-1, 22 KO) facing off against the relatively unkown Jesus Gurrola (20-5-3, 9 KO) in a 10 round junior welterweight bout.  It wasn't to long ago that DeMarco was viewed as one of the best lightweights in the world.  That was until he met a pre-Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner who stopped DeMarco in the 8th round and took his light title.  DeMarco has fought and won one time since that meeting with Broner and has now taken his talents to the welterweight division.  DeMarco is only 28 years old and if he keeps winning he should earn a title shot very soon.  He has fought many top talents such as Broner, John Molina, Jorge Linares, and the late Edwin Valero.  DeMarco is a very poised southpaw who has a good jab and very fast hands, and very good power,  especially in his left hand.  He is also a patient fighter who never seems to fight out of control.  Against the less experienced Gurrola those are traits that could lead to a lopsided win.  Unlike DeMarco, Gurrola hasn't faced many top fighters.  Gurrola has never been stopped in his five losses however he has been dropped many times and does not have a good chin at all, he has even been dropped by weak jabs.  Of DeMarco's three losses two of them have been by knockout but considering those came against monster punchers Broner and Valero his chin should still be considered pretty good and certainly better than Gurrola's.  Even though Gurrola has never been knocked out I expect that to change come Saturday night.  DeMarco could easily stop him in the 1st round especially when you consider that Gurrola doesn't move around the ring very well.  However I expect Gurrola to stick around at least for a few rounds before eventually being stopped in the 7th round.

Humberto Gutierrez vs. Abner Lopez: The other 10 round fight will be in the welterweight division and should be an absolute slugfest.  Neither Humberto Gutierrez (29-4-2, 21 KO) or Abner Lopez (16-3, 15 KO) would be described as a slick, skilled boxer.  Instead they are both fighters who really on excellent power to win fights.  Both fighters are very young with Gutierrez being 26 and Lopez 23 but they have not been coddled by their promoters and have already been in some tough action fights.  What could make this a possible fight of the year candidate is the similarities in the way both men fight.  Both Gutierrez and Lopez have come forward mentalities and look to punish their opponents with every touch of the gloves.  If both men decided to balls to the wall and fight toe to toe it could provide fans with a fight they won't soon forget.  Some differences between the fighters is that Gutierrez is a a southpaw and most of his knockouts come from his powerful and fast left hand.  Lopez is an orthodox fighter who doesn't have the hand speed of Gutierrez.  However Lopez has a sledgehammer of a right hand that he always looks to drop the thunder with.  This fight will most likely take place in a phone booth and it should come down to the quicker hands of Gutierrez vs. the more impressive power of Lopez.  When the action gets heavy on the inside I think Gutierrez will be able to land many quick, short punches.  However those punches even though they will be more frequent won't do as much damage as Lopez's will.  I expect Lopez to win this fight  by the way of 6th round knockout.
