Fox Deportes Quick Picks

Lopez will look to outclass Rodriguez
Ganigan Lopez vs. Mario Rodriguez: A fight in the strawweight division may not draw many fans to the television, but any chance to watch boxing in Spanish on Fox Deportes can't be missed.  The main event of tonight's card will be a 12 round bout between heavy handed veteran Ganigan Lopez (23-5-15 KO) and the much younger Mario Rodriguez (16-8-4, 11 KO).  The difference in this fight will be the jab of Lopez.  He uses it very well, something that allows him to get inside on his opponents and land power punches.  Rodriguez on the other hand doesn't make use of a jab and instead tries to get in the pocket just by coming forward.  Both fighters have heavy hands for such a low weight class and they also have good chins, each only having been knocked out once.  It is pretty clear that Lopez is the more talented fighter, he has the better power and is also the better boxer.  If Rodriguez thinks he can get to the inside on Lopez but coming forward behind a high guard and hooks he will be in for a rude awakening.  If Rodriguez just plows ahead all night Lopez will be able to land his jab at will and control the pace of the fight.  Rodriguez does fight strong from the inside so although Lopez has good power he should stay outside the pocket and use his jab to set up quick counter punches.  I expect Lopez to outclass Rodriguez on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Alvarez isn't as skilled as his brother
Ramon Alvarez vs. Gilberto Flores Hernandez: The other notable bout on this card will be a 10 round junior middleweight fight between Ramon Alvarez (16-4-2, 9 KO) and Gilberto Flores Hernandez (23-13, 18 KO).  Alvarez is probably best know for being the brother of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez but looking to gain more fans of his own with this televised fight.  When you see Alvarez in the ring one thing immediately comes to mind and that is how he fights like a poor mans version of his brother.  The reason he is a poor mans version of his brother is because his power isn't as impressive and he hands a little slower.  Yet Alvarez uses a similar defensive and offensive style.  Like his brother he goes to the body very well and likes to use side to side head movement as he reaches with his jab to gauge distance and get inside.  Luckily for Alvarez his opponent shouldn't put up too much a of a fight.  Hernandez is a slugger without slick boxing skills and he also has a weak chin.  Out of Hernandez's thirteen losses, nine have been by knockout.  Hernandez is an all or nothing type of fighter.  He has good power and always looks for the knockout because if he doesn't score the knockout there is a good chance he won't win.  However he sometimes focuses too much on scoring the knockout and ends up getting dropped himself.  While Alvarez doesn't have nearly as much power as his famous brother he should have enough to dispatch Hernandez.  I expect Alvarez to win this fight via 6th round knockout.
