UniMas Quick Picks

Felix Jr. will look to stay unbeaten
Jose Felix Jr. vs. Santos Benavides: The main event of this Saturday's UniMas card isn't so much a fight as it is a showcase for the talented Jose Felix Jr. (25-0-1, 20 KO).  Felix Jr. will be showcasing his talent against Santos Benavides (23-4-2, 17 KO) in a 10 round bout in the junior lightweight division.  Felix Jr. is only 21 years old but he has the skills and ring IQ of a veteran fighter.  Not only does he have fast hands and tremendous power to the head and body but he is also highly effective defensively making good use of his fast lateral movement.  On the other hand, Benavides doesn't move around the ring very well and can best be described as plodding.  He keeps his hands high and tight and moves forward slowly looking to land a power punch.  Benavides will be the veteran in the ring and has faced top fighters such as Roman "Rocky" Martinez but he just doesn't have the talent level to compete with Felix Jr..  Benavides is coming off back to back losses and this fight against Felix Jr. shouldn't change things.  In Felix Jr.'s last two fights he scored 1st round knockouts and while this fight should last longer, it won't go the distance.  Felix Jr. should win this fight by the way of 7th round knockout.

Avalos will look to stay hot in 2013
Chris Avalos vs. Rolly Lunas: The other notable fight on the UniMas card will be a 10 round bout in the junior featherweight division and should be more  competitive than the main event, especially since the two fighters have such contrasting styles in the ring.  Chris Avalos (22-2, 16 KO) is a puncher who likes to get on the inside and goes to the body very well.  Rolly Lunas (34-8-1, 20 KO) is a boxer who likes to work from the outside but will need to be more active if he wants to beat Avalos.  At 30 years old Lunas is 6 years older than Avalos but has never fought in the United States before so there may be some distractions for him.  This fight will be a good test for Avalos, having to figure out and overcome the veteran boxer.  If this fight takes place in the center of the ring Lunas may be able to outbox Avalos and keep safe enough distance so he won't get dropped.  Also Lunas hasn't lost a fight since 2009 and is 7-0 since that loss so Avalos will have his hands full.  Avalos will need to keep Lunas up against the ropes and in the corners if he wants to win but he will also need to box a little more than usual.  Avalos should box Lunas and get inside to work the body when the opportunities present themselves, if he tries to bully Lunas early the veteran will probably be able to outbox him.  Even though I usually pick boxers over punchers I have a feeling Avalos will be to young and hungry for Lunas to beat.  Avalos will win this fight via 10th round stoppage.
