Fox Sports 2 Quick Picks

Their first fight ended in a draw
Shawn Porter vs. Julio Diaz: If you're looking for an appetizer before this Saturdays PPV main course Fox Sports 2 has you covered with some Thursday night boxing.  The main event of that card will be a 10 round fight in the welterweight division featuring two fighters very familiar with each other because they fought only eight months ago.  Those fighters are the young, athletic Shawn Porter and the the tough veteran Julio Diaz.  There first fight ended in a split decision draw so they will go at it again to see who the superior fighter is.  At this point in their careers Porter should be viewed as the favorite.  He is only 25 years old and is very athletic in the ring with some of the fastest hands in the sport.  He has a career record of 21-0-1 with 14 knockouts and the future looks bright.  Across the ring will be a fighter who has been fighting professionally for the past fourteen years.  Diaz has a record of 40-8-1 with 29 knockouts.  Diaz has by far more experience in big time fights, taking on elite level fighters such as Amir Khan and Jose Luis Castillo but that experience also means he has been in a lot of tough fights.  Porter hasn't had the same level of opposition as Diaz but he should be the better fighter right now.  This should be a good action fight but Porter's hands and footwork will prove to fast for the older Diaz.  Porter doesn't have huge power but Diaz doesn't have a great chin so I expect Porter to get the win via 8th round knockout.

Mayweather promoted Badou Jack
Badou Jack vs. Marco Antonio Periban: Another fight worth noting on a card that will feature three and a half hours of boxing and the debut of Oscar De La Hoya's nephew Diego is a 10 round fight in the super middleweight division.  That fight will feature two up and coming fighters, Badou Jack who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather and Marco Antonio Periban.  Of the two fighters it is Jack who has been busier as of late, already fighting four times in 2013 going 4-0 with 2 knockouts.  However Jack has never fought an elite level fighter and while Periban isn't at that level he still should provide a good challenge.  Jack has a career record of 15-0 with 10 knockouts and is being brought along carefully.  Periban was also being brought along carefully until he decided to take a step up and fight Sakio Bika, a fight Periban lost by majority decision.  Periban holds a record of 20-1 with 13 knockouts with his only loss coming against Bika his last time in the ring.  Both of these fighter's careers have gone similar thus far, however their fighting styles couldn't be more different.  Jack always shows up in great shape and is extremely calm in the ring, working behind a stiff jab until he can close the distance and land big combinations.  Periban usually enters the ring with a little water in the basement but his lack of conditioning doesn't show up in his fights.  Periban has very, very fast hands and unleashes combinations that seem like lightning strikes.  Another difference is that when Jack gets his man hurt he carefully tries to drop him while Periban pounces all over his man when he has him hurt.  This fight could easily go either way, Jack is probably the better overall fighter but Periban is much faster and more lethal.  I think that Jack's calmness in the ring will payoff for this fight and he will win via split decision.
