NBC Sports Net Quick Picks

Curtis Stevens vs. Saul Roman: This Saturday NBC Sports Net will televise a solid triple header.  That card will be headlined by a 10 round middleweight bout that should be all action from start to finish.  The two fighters who will do battle that night are Curtis Stevens (24-3, 17 KO) and tough as nails Mexican journeyman Saul Roman (37-9, 21 KO).  The fighter with the higher upside is Stevens who is looking to get in the mix in a stacked middleweight division and a win on Saturday could do just that.  The only real name fighters Stevens has fought so far are Andre Dirrell and Jesse Brinkley and he lost both of those fights.  Besides those two fights Stevens hasn't fought anyone worth noting.  Roman isn't exactly a huge step up in talent level for Stevens but he does represent a dangerous puncher who never backs down.  In fact both of these men are punchers who also take their share of punishment.  Roman is all action always throwing punches and never backing down.  Roman is a bit long in the tooth and of his 9 losses 6 have been by the way of knockout.  However Roman has fought some of the very best in the sport including Sergio Martinez, Yuri Foreman, Jesus Soto Karass, Marco Antonio Rubio, Vanes Martirosyan, and a few others.  Clearly he has more ring experience and is used to fighting at a higher level than Stevens is.  The problem for Roman in this fight is the style in which he fights.  Roman displays the typical Mexican bravado and never backs down which is dangerous since he has a weak chin and Stevens is known as a big puncher.  If this fight happened a few years ago Roman might be the favorite but now he is seen as a gatekeeper and Stevens is known as the man on the rise.  I expect Stevens to win this fight via 8th round stoppage.

Tomasz Adamek vs. Dominick Guinn: Another fight on Saturday night probably won't be a very exciting one, at least not for fans of Dominick Guinn (34-9-1, 23 KO) who took this fight with only a few weeks notice when Tony Grano withdrew due to a new injury.  Guinn will be fighting tough Polish heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (48-2, 29 KO) in a 10 round bout.  Guinn has fought some legit opponents namely James Toney and Eddie Chambers but those fights were in 2005 & 2007 respectively.  Now Guinn is 38 years old and not nearly the fighter he used to be and in his last five fights he is 2-3.  All of this information should make Adamek salivate.  He is still at the top of his game even at 36 years old and you can bet he is still looking for a fight against Wladimir Klitschko, especially since Adamek already has a tough loss against his brother Vitali Klitschko.  Since that loss Adamek is 4-0 beating quality fighters such as Eddier Chambers and Steve Cunningham.  What should make this fight pretty easy for Adamek is the fact that Guinn usually comes into the ring with a little water in the basement, meaning he isn't in the best physical condition.  He is slow and plodding and should be easy pickings for the skilled boxer Adamek.  I expect Adamek to get an easy win via unanimous decision.

Eddie Chambers vs. Thabisco Mchunu: Another fight on this card will also be a 10 round affair this time in the cruiserweight division.  That fight will feature "Fast" Eddie Chambers (36-3, 18 KO) taking on unknown South African fighter Thabisco Mchunu (13-1, 10 KO).  Chambers is dropping down from heavyweight for the first time in his career.  He had a successful run in the heavyweight division but size was always a problem and he lost whenever he stepped up his level of competition including losses to Tomasz Adamek, Wladimir Klitschko, and Alexander Povetkin.  Chambers does have fast hands but the rest of him isn't so quick.  He doesn't have great footwork or head movement which at times can make him an easy target.  Being an easy target isn't something that Mchunu has to worry about, he has good footwork and solid defense and also always comes into the ring in excellent physical condition.  The problem with Mchunu is that he has never fought outside of his native South Africa and has never been in the ring against any real high end talent.  He does have very good punching power and if he can stay active and move around the ring he could make it a tough night for Chambers.  However big time boxing fans are well aware of foreign fighters coming to the U.S. for the first time and being exposed and tonight should be no different.  I expect Chambers to get an easy win via unanimous decision and look good in the cruiserweight division.
