Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Argenis Mendez vs. Arash Usmanee: This weeks edition of Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 will be the season finale.  The main event of the night will be a 12 round bout in the junior lightweight division between Argenis Mendez (21-2, 11 KO) and Arash Usmanee (20-1, 10 KO).  These fighters records are almost identical as is their height and they are also very close in age.  However there are some slight differences in fighting style and the level of talent they have faced.  The more skilled boxer is Mendez who is very slick defensively and can also fight on the inside.  Mendez likes to move around a lot in the ring and has excellent footwork along with an effective shoulder roll.  But Mendez isn't just a defensive fighter, although he posses little to no power he will trade punches on the inside.  Mendez is a fast accurate puncher and is very dangerous on the inside.  He doesn't have one punch knockout power but he is the kind of puncher who wears his opponent down round after round.  Usmanee will try his best to not let that happen.  Usmanee also isn't a very big puncher but he doesn't seem to know it.  He throws all of his punches with bad intentions bad has a bad habit of getting to wild and throwing wide, looping punches.  Also the level of opposition that Usmanee has faced thus far isn't up to par with the fighters Mendez has fought.  Something that could give Usmanee a boost of confidence is the fact that most knowledgeable boxing fans regard him as an undefeated fighter.  His lone loss came against Rances Barthelemy in a horrible decision on Friday Night Fights in January.  This fight is a toss up, it could easily go either way or end in a draw and no one would be surprised.  I expect a good, closely contested fight but a fight that sees Mendez use his defensive skills to outbox Usmanee on his way to a unanimous decision victory.

Claudio Marrero vs. Jesus Marcel Andres Cuellar: The other featured fight on Friday night promises to be an explosive one.  It will be a 12 round fight in the featherweight division featuring two southpaws who are two of the heaviest punchers in their division.  Those two fighters are Claudio Marrero (14-0, 11 KO) and Jesus Marcel Andres Cuellar (22-1, 18 KO).  This fight much like the main event is also a toss up fight that could easily go either way.  Marrero is probably the hotter prospect and has a similar fighting style to fellow Dominican Republic native Javier Fortuna.  Marrero has very fast hands and punches from awkward angles.  A big benefit for Marrero is that he has fought in the United States many times while his opponent Cuellar has never fought outside of his native Argentina.  One of the things both fighters have in common, besides being southpaws with power, is that neither man has ever fought anyone worth mentioning.  While both fighters have one punch power, Cuellar's seems to be more vicious.  Also Cuellar is much better defensively, he keeps both hands high and never walks in unprotected.  Marrero has the quicker feet which allows him to avoid more punches but he will walk in with his right hand very low which is dangerous against a puncher like Cuellar.  Who wins this fight really depends on what type of fight it is.  If this fight plays out on the outside than Marrero should be able to use his quickness to outbox Cuellar but if this is a phone booth fight than the safer defense and ridiculous punching power of Cuellar should allow him to win.  I'm not sure how this fight will play out but being that all of Cuellar's fights have come in his native Argentina I think he will get slightly exposed and Marrero will get the win via split decision.
