Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Javier Fortuna vs. Luis Franco: The last time Javier Fortuna (22-0, 16 KO) appeared on Friday Night Fights he obliterated Miguel Zamudio in a brutal first round knockout that is a candidate for Knockout of the Year.  This time around Fortuna will be fighting Luis Franco (11-1, 7 KO) in a 10 round bout in the featherweight division.  Fortuna is a very fun fighter to watch because he seems to have it all, he is slick, quick, and powerful.  At this point in his career his team is smartly bringing him along slowly against lesser competition until he can make a name for himself in the U.S. and earn bigger fights.  Because he was so much more talented than Zamudio in his bout fans still haven't really seen all Fortuna has to offer but hopefully this Friday will answer some questions.  As for Franco he is not your typical defensive Cuban counter puncher.  Instead he fights with his hands low and punishment on his mind.  Franco likes to come forward and apply constant pressure.  He is coming off a split decision loss but usually looks to end fights before they can go to the scorecards.  With both of these fighter preferring offense to defense and knockouts to decisions this should be a helluva fight while it lasts.  If Franco was your typical Cuban counter puncher he would probably be the favorite, but he isn't.  Fortuna is younger, by 7 years and also a lot faster.  I expect Fortuna to look just as good as the last time he appeared on ESPN2 but this time the knockout will have to wait a few more rounds.  Fortuna will win via 4th round knockout.

Kermit Cintron vs. Jonathan Batista: Another notable fight on Friday night features a veteran of the sport who big time boxing fans know very well, Kermit Cintron (33-5-2, 28 KO).  Cintron will be taking on Jonathan Batista (14-1, 7 KO) in a 10 round welterweight fight.  Cintron has fought some of the best in the sport including Sergio Martinez, Paul Williams, Canelo Alvarez, Alfredo Angulo, and Antonio Margarito twice.  Unfortunately for Cintron he lost the vast majority of those fights when he did take the step up in competition.  His last fight was a draw against Adrian Granados in a bout where neither fighter looked very sharp.  It is still unclear if Cintron thinks he can fight for a title again or if he is just collecting the last few paychecks he can before his career is over.  Batista hopes it's the latter.  Batista is a relatively unknown fighter out of the Dominican Republic where all of his fights have taken place, except his lone loss which was a fight in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  This fight should have solid action throughout albeit not of the fast paced variety.  This fight is all about where each fighter is currently at in his career.  Cintron is on the downside and is now being used as a gatekeeper while Batista is on the rise and trying to gain more attention with U.S. fight fans.  If Batista wants to win he should stay very busy and not give Cintron a chance to set up his offense.  But Cintron is a crafty veteran who should be able to outbox and outsmart Batista on his way to a split decision victory.
