Showtime Quick Picks

Andre Berto vs. Jesus Soto Karass: Showtime will air a solid triple header this Saturday headlined by a 12 round fight for a vacant welterweight title featuring Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO).  Berto is coming off a loss to Robert Guerrero in the Fight of the Year runner-up.  In his comeback fight Berto will be taking on tough Mexican challenger Jesus Soto Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO).  While Karass's record doesn't look very impressive, looks can be deceiving.  Some of the fighters he has lost to include Marcos Maidana, Yuri Foreman, Gabriel Rosado, and Mike Jone who are all quality boxers and losing to them is nothing to hang your head about.  Berto also has some high profile losses on he resume.  For a few years Berto was constantly brought up as a possible opponent for Floyd Mayweather but Berto kept losing to his opponents who would then go on to fight Mayweather themselves.  This happened against Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero and this fight should tell us whether Berto will just be a great action fighter from here on out or if he can become a skilled fighter and top 10 p4p challenger.  This fight should be epic, both men are known for taking a ton of punishment and never giving in.  Fans could see both fighters taste the canvass and get up to fight on, there will be a ton of heart on display come Saturday night.  Karass is a game fighter who will come to win but Berto should prove to be too skilled for Karass to overcome.  I expect an absolute action slugfest that will have fans on their feet for most of the 12 rounds.  Berto should come back strong from his last loss and win this fight via unanimous decision.

Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves: One of the other fights on Showtime will be a gift to fans who love knockouts.  It will be a 12 round title fight in the welterweight division.  The fight will feature two of the heaviest hitters in the sport, Keith Thurman (20-0, 18 KO) and Diego Chaves (22-0, 18 KO).  Chaves has boxed more rounds than Thurman and has many more 12 round fights but his level of competition is much lower.  Chaves is a native of Argentina and has never fought outside of his home country.  Because of this Chaves has yet to face any top level talent.  Thurman also doesn't have a very deep resume but he has beat Carlos Quintana and Jan Zaveck to notable names.  In Thurman's last fight against Zaveck he didn't get the knockout he always craves but he boxed beautifully and got a unanimous decision victory in which he won every single round.  However this fight probably won't go the distance.  Both men have similar fighting styles coming forward and pressing the action and both are always gunning for the knockout.  This fight really boils down to the experience of Chaves and the question of how good  the opponents were he was facing in Argentina.  It wouldn't come as a shock if Chaves got the win but because he has fought better talent I expect Thurman to get the win via 10th round stoppage.

Omar Figueroa vs. Nihito Arakawa: Another fight on Showtime this Saturday will also be a 12 round title fight this time in the lightweight division.  This fight will feature unbeaten young fighter Omar Figueroa (21-0-1, 17 KO) and  Japanese veteran Nihito Arakawa (24-2-1, 16 KO).  A few things to take note of for this fight is the age difference of the two fighters.  Figueroa is only 23 years old while Arakawa is 8 years his senior at 31 years of age.  Another thing that raises the red flags is the fact that Arakawa has only fought outside of Japan one time when he traveled to Mexico to take on Daniel Estrada, a fight in which he lost.  Something else that can be dangerous is the power of Figueroa who is one of he heaviest hitters in the lightweight division.  That is something that might not sit well with Arakawa because Japanese fighters have a reputation of not having great chins.  I expect Figueroa to look very impressive and win this fight via 7th round knockout.
