Friday Night Fights Quick Pick

Juan Carlos Burgos vs. Yakubu Amidu: Coming off a very controversial split decision draw to Rocky Martinez, junior lightweight contender Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-1, 20 KO) will be taking on Yakubu Amidu (20-4-1, 18 KO) in a 12 round fight for a vacant junior lightweight title.  Burgos was the challenger in his last fight for Martinez's title belt which might be why he didn't get the decision victory.  Typically the challenger has to really dominate to get a close decision and while Burgos looked good he faded late which allowed Martinez to win enough rounds to keep his title a little longer.  At only 25 years old the ceiling is very high for Burgos who is tough, smart, and has enough pop to be dangerous.  His opponent Amidu is 28 years old and coming off back-to-back decision losses, one of which was a tough fight against the always entertaining Ji-Hoon Kim.  Amidu isn't the most skilled fighter in the world and he relies solely on his punching power to win fights.  Only two of Amidu's wins have come via decision all the other were by the way of knockout.  This has a chance to be a very, very fun fight if both fighters decided to exchange at high volumes all night but Burgos does like to pick his spots so the action probably won't be nonstop.  Burgos is by far the more talented fighter and he should be able to use his ring intelligence to outbox Amidu on his was to a unanimous decision victory.  It's doubtful that Burgos will make the same mistake he did against Martinez by being too passive in the deep rounds so he should stay active for all 12 rounds and win in a good fight.

Josenilson Dos Santos vs. Miguel Gonzalez: The other notable fight on this week's edition of Friday Night Fights will be a 10 round contest in the lightweight division.  That fight features untested Brazilian Josenilson Dos Santos (26-1, 16 KO) and Miguel Gonzalez (21-3, 15 KO).  All of Dos Santos' fights have come in his native Brazil except for 2 fights in 2009 which were in the U.S. and he is 1-1 in those fights.  His only loss came at the hands of Diego Magdaleno which is nothing to be ashamed of.  This will be a big time fight for Dos Santos if he hopes of making a name for himself in the U.S. market.  A market that Gonzalez is very familiar with being from Ohio.  Gonzalez's only real test came against Mike Dallas Jr. who is a solid fighter but nothing spectacular and Gonzalez lost that fight via unanimous decision in a shutout.    This should be an exciting fight because these are two guys looking to make a name for themselves and there is no better way to do that besides being fan friendly and going for the knockout.  Neither fighter has ever been stopped so it would be a big shock if it happened on Friday but with two untested fighters anything can happen.  One thing that could very well happen is a clash of heads being that Dos Santos is an orthodox fighter and Gonzalez is a southpaw.  I like Dos Santos as the better prospect but this fight could easily go either way.  I think we will see Dos Santos get a solid win via split decision.
