Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Rances Barthelemy vs. Fahsai Sakkreerin: This weeks edition of Friday Night Fights on ESPN will be live from Minnesota and should be a solid, if not spectacular card.  The main event will be a 12 round junior lightweight title eliminator and should be a showcase for skilled Cuban boxer Rances Barthelemy (18-0, 11 KO).  He will be taking on a relative unknown fighter in the U.S. by the name of Fahsai Sakkreerin (39-3-1, 21 KO) who has fought his entire career, minus one fight, in his home country of Thailand.  This fight should introduce more fans to the undefeated Barthelemy who does not fight like the typical Cuban defensive counter puncher.  Barthelemy likes to exchange punches from close range and doesn't have great defensive skills.  So for the fans who are bored by watching defensive geniuses Guillermo Rigondeaux or Erislandy Lara, fear not.  Sakkreerin should be utterly outclassed and this may be his only fight in the U.S. but the future looks much better for Barthelemy and an exciting fight on Friday would help a lot in his advancement.  I expect Barthelemy to dominate Sakkreerin and get the unanimous decision victory.

Donovan George vs. Caleb Truax: The first fight on Friday should be the closer, more exciting one.  It will feature a Friday Night Fights favorite in Donovan George (24-3-2, 21 KO) taking on untested but talented Caleb Truax (21-1-1, 12 KO).  The most exciting aspect of this fight is the fact that neither fighter cares too much about defense.  George, whose nickname is "Da Bomb" likes to throw hard and heavy at close range and doesn't seem to mind being hit.  His counterpart Truax isn't as big of a puncher but he also likes to fight inside using his solid uppercut to pick apart his opponent.  Truax's biggest test thus far was a fight against the washed up Jermaine Taylor who he won a unanimous decision over so fans haven't really seen how good, or bad, Truax can be.  Big time boxing fans know what they will get out of George though.  His two biggest fights came against now light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and the very underrated Edwin Rodriguez, both of which resulted in a loss for George.  In his last fight against David Alonso Lopez which was on Friday Night Fights ended in a draw but George looked very slow.  George has been in many battles and it may have taken its toll  but he is only 28 years old and still has a chance for bigger things.  George needs to look sharp and fast against Truax, but don't be surprised if Truax goes to work and outboxes him for most of the night.  I expect George to win via majority decision in a close fight where big punches are traded fast and often.
