Showtime Quick Picks

Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse: This fight has the chance to be a runaway favorite for Fight of the Year.  It will showcase Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO) taking on one of the heaviest punchers in the sport, Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO).  Of the two men Peterson is the one with the more impressive resume.  That is due to Timothy Bradley, Victor Ortiz, Victor Cayo, and Amir Khan being on his opponent list.  Matthysse also has a strong resume and his two biggest fights both ended with him losing.  He lost controversial decisions against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in each fighters home towns, two decisions that could have easily been in favor of Matthysse.  This fight will be a slugfest.  While both men can box they prefer to get in close and inflict punishment on their opponent.  Matthysse has much more power then Peterson, but Peterson is probably the craftier fighter.  Peterson will try to keep the fight in a phone booth and use a combination of clinches and well timed punches to wear down Mattyhsse.  But a phone booth fight against a slugger like Matthysse can end a night early.  If Peterson does choose to fight close he will need to fight perfect and have extremely tight defense.  For his part Mattyhsse will also look to keep the fight close and end Peterson's night early.  Fans should expect a large doses of heart and toughness.  This fight could come down to which fighter shows the stronger chin and which men gets off his punches first.  Expect blood and fireworks!  Lucas Matthysse will be too powerful for Peterson and will knock him out in the 11th round.

Devon Alexander vs. Lee Purdy: This fight was supposed to be Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) against Kell Brook.  But due to multiple injuries Brook dropped out and up stepped Lee Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO) to take his place and shot at Alexander's title.  But Purdy showed up to the weigh-in today overweight and is not eligible to win a belt, which also means even with a loss Alexander cannot lose his belt.  In 2011 Alexander was one of the most buzzed about young fighters along with Timothy Bradley so fans were super excited when these two men stepped in the ring against each other.  Unfortunately for Alexander he was caught with an accidental headbutt and refused to continue.  Since then the once hot young fighters career hasn't been the same.  When a boxer quits in a fight it is very hard for him to regain fans.  But since that fight Alexander has taken on Lucas Mattyhsse, getting a very controversial win, Marcos Maidana, and Randall Bailey.  His fights usually all go the same way he works behind his jab, jabs, and then jabs some more.  He isn't the most exciting fighter to watch but he is effective.  Lee Purdy should be heavily outclassed in this fight, he has no boxers worth noting on his resume and has never fought outside of the U.K.  If the main event is a slugfest, this fight will be a chess match.  Devon Alexander should win fairly easily by unanimous decision.
