Friday Night Fights Quick Picks

Vernon Paris vs. Manuel Perez: From 2010 to 2011 Vernon Paris (27-1, 16 KO) was 8-0 and was considered a rising star, then came 2011.  Paris ran into a tough Zab Judah and got stopped in the 9th round.  Since that defeat he has only fought one time, a 3rd round destruction of Guy Packer a fighter who is used when a guy needs an easy fight.  Proof of that is in Packer's career record of 4-39-2.  Paris is only 25 years old and hopes to make that lone loss to Judah just a blip on the radar.  On Friday night he will be fighting Manuel Perez (19-8-1, 4 KO) who is much better then Packer, but still nothing special.  A plus for Perez is that he has taken on top fighters such as Brandon Rios, Paul McCloske, and Mercito Gesta.  His first fight against Rios was ruled a draw.  This fight against Paris will be a 10 round bout at welterweight and it would be shocking, and bad for Paris if the fight went all 10.  Paris should be able to dispatch Perez in the 7th round.

Cornelius Lock vs. Lonnie Smith: The other notable fight on the card will pit battle tested veteran Cornelius Lock (20-6-1, 13 KO) against Lonnie Smith (14-4-3, 10 KO).  Lock has already fought in 2013 but had zero fights in 2011 and 2012.  He is 2-2 in his last 4 fights and the two losses came against two of the best in the sport, Mickey Garcia and Daniel Ponce De Leon.  Lock also stopped Orlando Cruz in 5 rounds back in 2009.  But Lock is 34 years old and of his 6 losses 4 have been by knockout.  His career is certainly dwindling down.  His opponent Smith hasn't fought anyone legit outside of Vicente Escobedo.  Much like Lock, Smith hasn't looked good as of late, his record is 0-2-1 in his last 3 fights.  For his part Smith is 8 years younger than Lock and could use that to his advantage down the stretch.  It will be a 10 round fight at junior lightweight.  Because Smith has looked so horrendous lately the smart money is on Lock to win by 8th round stoppage.
