Bad for Business

When news first broke of HBO no longer doing business with Golden Boy Promotions a lot came to mind.  Things like how will this effect boxing, and what ramifications will it have on HBO and Showtime, as well as Top Rank and Golden Boy.  But for HBO subscribers the biggest question may have been, what will happen to fan favorite and future superstar Adrien Broner?

At first the answer seemed simple, HBO is no longer making fights with Golden Boy who promotes Broner, so Broner will no longer fight on HBO.  But things took a turn when Broner tweeted that he was "still Mr. HBO, and always will be."  Suddenly HBO subscribers had a glimmer of hope that Broner would stay on their airwaves.  That is because Broner is a future superstar and Golden Boy needs to keep him happy because his contract is up with them in April and there have been rumors that new promoter 50 Cent is going to make a big play for him.  Although 50 Cent doesn't yet have the power to throw his weight around as a promoter he does have the money to keep Broner happy, and is obviously a famous rapper.  Fans know very well that when Broner does his ring entrance who usually raps his way into the ring, so 50 Cents ties to the music industry could appeal to him.  So if Broner really wanted to push to stay on HBO, Golden Boy may have obliged him.

It is now official though that Broner's next fight will come against Paulie Malignaggi on June 22nd and that fight will be televised by Showtime.  But this could prove to be a very bad move for Broner's blossoming career.  HBO has a long history of grooming PPV stars such as Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao, while Showtime has never groomed any PPV powerhouses.  Broner is only 23 years old so a temporary move to Showtime might not do too much harm to his PPV earnings in the long run, but if he were to stay at Showtime long term, his chances of being the next PPV super star a la Floyd Mayweather could take a serious hit.  Showtime doesn't have as much money, or as many viewers as HBO, which is one reason they have never created a PPV star.

If Broner intends to become the face of boxing and earn the type of money Mayweather and Pacquiao have, he needs to jump off the Golden Boy ship and swim over to Top Rank, or 50 Cent's SMS Promotions.  It is simple, Showtime does not know how to make PPV stars, while HBO had done it with ease.  Once, or if Broner gets to the level of a Mayweather then it won't matter if he fights on HBO PPV or Showtime PPV because all fans will buy the fight.  But if he wants to get to that point HBO is the network he needs to roll with.
