Serrano vs. Voraberger Fight Preview

NEW YORK -- There are two fighters in action this weekend who have won titles in six or more weight classes.  One of those fighters is Manny Pacquiao.  The other is Amanda Serrano (35-1-1, 16 KOs) and she will be looking to win her seventh division title on Jan. 18 when she faces off against interim bantamweight world champion Eva Voraberger (24-5, 11 KOs) on DAZN.  The fight will be contested at 115 pounds with a vacant WBO world junior bantamweight title on the line.

Serrano is a powerful southpaw who has gone up and down in weight seemingly at will.  She has won titles as low as 118 pounds and, more recently, as high as 140 pounds which seems to be her limit.  Serrano is an aggressive fighter with good power in any division.  She works behind a stiff jab and has a nice right hook to go along with it.  Serrano also has a good left hand but she can get caught head hunting sometimes.  Defensively Serrano isn't great, which is in large part due to her aggressive style.  She has shown a tremendous chin though and has never been dropped as a pro.

Hailing proudly from Puerto Rico, Serrano, known as 'The Real Deal,' has been fighting professionally since 2009.  She won her first title in 2011 as a junior lightweight and in her most recent fight she handled Yamila Reynoso to win a junior welterweight title.  In this fight Serrano will be looking to join elite company.  Currently the only fighters to win world titles in six or more divisions are Serrano, Pacquiao, and Oscar De La Hoya.  A win over Voraberger would propel Serrano past De La Hoya and she and eight division champion Pacquiao would be the only two fighters to ever win world titles in seven or more divisions.  While history is certainly on her mind so is a showdown with Olympic gold medalist and current IBF and WBA lightweight champion Katie Taylor who beat Serrano's sister Cindy in late 2018.

Voraberger is an orthodox fighter who will be at a size and power disadvantage against Serrano.  She likes to come forward and fight on the inside and throws a mean left hook to the body.  With that left hook Voraberger also has a strong right hand she throws over the top with bad intentions.  Her jab could be a good weapon but she doesn't use it as often as she should and she can sometimes get caught flat footed.  Voraberger is able to find success on the inside because she has a strong chin.  She has been knocked out but that came in her professional debut and she hasn't tasted the canvas since.  However, she does carry less power than Serrano so if she stands and trades she could find herself in trouble.

When it comes to winning titles Voraberger has a nice collection too.  She has captured titles in three divisions, her first title coming as a flyweight, her second as a junior bantamweight, and her most recent as a bantamweight.  The lowest weight Serrano has fought at was 118 pounds so she will really be dropping down for this fight.  Voraberger should feel more comfortable at 115 pounds since she's won titles at that weight before and most recently fought at 118.

This fight should be a fun one for the fans.  Serrano is one of the best female fighters in all of boxing and both she and Veraberger love to come forward and exchange heavy leather.  While Veraberger should be more comfortable at 115 pounds she will also be the smaller fighter and doesn't hit as hard as Serrano.  There is no telling how Serrano's body will handle moving from the junior welterweight division in her last fight to the junior bantamweight division for this bout but as long as she didn't drain herself she should be fine.  This fight should have plenty of action and it could all come down to who can handle their opponent's punches better.

PREDICTION: Both Amanda Serrano and Eva Voraberger have good chins and both love to mix things up on the inside.  There is a chance Serrano could be drained come fight night but that isn't likely considering she has a wealth of experience jumping up and down in weight.  Not only is Serrano the naturally bigger fighter but she also hits harder and that power will help her get the unanimous decision win.
