Commey vs. Chaniev Fight Preview

FRISCO, Texas -- Between ESPN and ESPN+ there will be plenty of fights for boxing fans to chose from on  Feb 2.  One of those fights, airing on regular ESPN, will be a title fight between Richard Commey (27-2, 24 KOs) and Isa Chaniev (13-1, 6 KOs).  Up for grabs in that bout will be a vacant IBF lightweight title.

Commey being raised  up in victory
Commey is an orthodox fighter from Ghana with excellent power, especially for a lightweight.  The 31-year-old likes to play the role of aggressor and with his power it is a role he fills adeptly.  When he gets inside he loves to let his hands go and will land a good short left hook.  From the outside Commey likes to bomb away with his right hand and when it lands clean it usually doesn't end well for his opponent.  He also does a tremendous job of creating space on the inside to land his right hand.  Defensively Commey isn't anywhere near great but he has shown a tremendous chin and Chaniev doesn't have the power to really hurt him.

While Commey has shown he has talent and power he has lost both of his step up fights.  Making things even worse for him was the fact that those loses, to Robert Easter and Denis Shafikov, came back-to-back.  Since those two losses Commey has gone 3-0 with two knockouts and against Chaniev he will look to make it four in a row.  A win would not only give Commey the vacant IBF title but it would throw him into the mix for some big fights in the division.  A loss, which would make him 3-3 in his last six, could be disastrous for a good fighter who doesn't have a huge fan base or name recognition.

Chaniev is a young Russian who will be fighting for the first time in the United States.  He usually starts fights out of the orthodox stance but he has the ability to switch it up and fight as a southpaw and he will sometimes switch from moment to moment.  As an orthodox fighter his jab doesn't do much but he does have a good straight right hand.  Chaniev is probably better when he fights as a southpaw.  His jab has more on it and when he gets inside he has a nice overhand left and can put in good work from various angles with his right hand.  He does have some bad habits though, like being too flat footed when he's letting his hands go on the inside and leaving his chin exposed, both of which could be dangerous against a puncher like Commey.

Chaniev being introduced
The vast majority of Chaniev's career fights have come in his native Russia.  He doesn't have many notable opponents on his resume, with the biggest name being Fedor Papazov.  That fight against Papazov was in 2017 and he lost a close unanimous decision.  Since that loss Chaniev has gone 3-0 with one knockout.  Now he takes on Commey who is probably the best opponent he's ever faced on ESPN which will be the biggest platform he's ever fought on.

This will be a huge fight for both Commey and Chaniev but for different reasons.  For Commey this will be a chance to win a vacant title and propel himself into some big fights in the lightweight division.  However, a loss would do serious damage to his standing in the division and he would most likely have to take a step down and work his way back for a year or perhaps even two before earning another title fight.  For Chaniev this is a chance to win a title on the biggest stage he's ever fought on and to introduce himself to American fans who have probably never heard of him before.  A loss would probably send him back to fighting in Russian, maybe never to be seen by American audiences again.  Look for Commey to try and impose his power advantage early while Chaniev tries to frustrate him by constantly switching stances.

PREDICTION: Isa Chaiev's ability to switch stances will give Richard Commey some problems, especially early.  However, Commey is the naturally bigger fighter and puts in good work from the outside and in the pocket.  Once Commey figures the awkward Chaniev out he should be able to land plenty of power punches on his way to an eighth round stoppage.
