Taylor vs. Serrano Fight Preview

BOSTON -- Irish culture and the city of Boston often seem intertwined.  Nearly 22 percent of the city's population claims Irish ancestry, the highest percentage in the country.  That makes Boston the perfect setting for a Katie Taylor (10-0, 5 KOs) title defense.  Taylor, who hails from Ireland, will be challenged by Cindy Serrano (27-5-3, 10 KOs), one half of the famous Serrano sisters.  On the line will be Taylor's IBF and WBO lightweight titles as the two pugilists square off on DAZN on Oct. 20.

Taylor punishing her opponent against the ropes
Taylor fights out of the orthodox stance and is an incredibly skilled offensive fighter.  She has quick hands and works behind a quick jab that she loves to follow with an accurate straight right hand.  Along with those punches she also throws a good left hook and she has an aggressive, fan-friendly style.  Taylor also does a tremendous job of attacking the body and while she does have power it is her volume of punches and excellent combinations that do the most damage.

Taylor is already 32 years old but has only been fighting professionally for two years.  Before turning pro she put together an incredibly successful amateur career and she has more gold medals than she can count on two hands.  Taylor won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics and has multiple gold medals at the World Championships, European Championships, and EU Championships.  As a pro Taylor has been just as impressive, winning all of her fights by the way of knockout or unanimous decision.  Women's boxing seems to really be stepping into the spotlight and with her impressive amateur background and skills, Taylor is definitely at the forefront.  However, before she looks ahead to other fights she will have her hands full against Serrano.

Serrano may not have the type of power that her sister Amanda does, but she still loves to let the leather fly.  She fights out of the orthodox stance and has fought as high as the welterweight division.  Recently though Serrano has been fighting in the featherweight division and will be moving up to the lightweight division to challenge Taylor for her titles.  Serrano likes to come forward and does her best work on the inside.  Her jab is decent as is his right hand but when she can get inside and land left hooks to the body she can do damage.  Despite her aggressive nature and penchant to mix things up on the inside, she has shown a good chin and has never been dropped as a pro.

Serrano throwing a right hand to the body
Serrano has been fighting professionally since 2003 and hasn't lost a fight since 2012.  After getting off to a hot start in her career Serrano then ran into a terrible stretch that saw her go 0-5-1 from 2007 to 2012 and she didn't fight at all in 2009 or 2010.  However, since that last loss Serrano has gone 12-0-1 with three knockouts.  While she has taken on some notable opponents, this will certainly be the biggest fight of Serrano's career as she looks to capture a world title in the lightweight division.

This fight should be a fun one for the fans.  Both Taylor and Serrano like to come forward and let their hands go, so the action should be relentless.  Taylor has much faster hands than Serrano so she should be able to control the action from the outside if she wants to.  When Taylor gets inside she should also do plenty of damage as long as she punches with Serrano.  Serrano, who has the slower hands, will need to make this a rough inside fight.  If she can stay in the pocket and really focus on the body of Taylor, she could slow her down and find success.

PREDICTION: Katie Taylor had an excellent amateur career and she has looked just as good as a professional.  Cindy Serrano is definitely a good fighter and she is always tough but she will be outclassed against Taylor.  Serrano will make it to the final bell but Taylor is going to win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.
