Farmer vs. Tennyson Fight Preview

BOSTON -- Philadelphia will be making a trip to Boston on Oct. 20 when Tevin Farmer (26-4-1, 5 KOs) defends his newly acquired IBF junior lightweight title.  Farmer will be defending that title against James Tennyson (22-2, 18 KOs), who will be making his U.S. debut in a fight that will stream live on DAZN.

Farmer shooting a jab against Gamaliel Diaz
Farmer is a southpaw who fights out of Philadelphia.  What he lacks in power he makes up for in tenacity and skills.  He likes to leave his lead hand low and does an excellent job of mixing up his attack with his jab.  Following the jab, Farmer also has a very accurate straight left hand and will often mix up the angles he throws the left with.  Farmer has solid had speed and does a tremendous job going to the body while not forgetting about landing punches upstairs and he is able to find success from the outside or in the pocket.  Defensively Farmer is good but not great and his ring IQ helps him when he gets in trouble.

Sometimes a fighter's record doesn't accurately reflect who they are.  That is certainly the case with Farmer.  His record indicates that he's lost four fights and has been stopped twice.  However, every single one of those losses came in the first two years of his career.  He was stopped in his professional debut and then was stopped again in 2012 by current lightweight champion Jose Pedraza, but that wasn't the best stoppage and Farmer was still on his feet.  Since that 2012 loss, Farmer has gone 19-0 with four knockouts and he also has one no contest in a fight he lost to Kenichi Ogawa.  Most felt that Farmer actually won that fight but the loss was overturned to a no contest after it was revealed Ogawa tested positive for a banned substance.  In his most recent fight Farmer totally dominated former champion Billy Dib to capture a vacant IBF title.

Tennyson is an orthodox fighter so a clash of heads could play a role in this fight since Farmer is a southpaw.  Hailing from the U.K., Tennyson likes to come forward and has good power.  He has a pretty good jab but will sometimes walk straight in without throwing it early enough.  Tennyson has a very heavy right hand and he loves to load up on that punch.  He also has a strong left hook and when he remembers to go to the body he can really punish his opponent.  However, Tennyson isn't the most accurate puncher and he isn't overly busy.  He likes to rely on his power and doesn't mind eating a few punches to land a power punch of his own.  Since Tennyson likes to come forward and stand in front of his opponent's he's there to be hit and both of his career losses came by the way of knockout, although he won't have to worry too much about Farmer's power.

Tennyson moments after dropping his opponent
Saturday will mark the first time that Tennyson fights for a world title.  It will also be his first fight in the United States and he's only fought outside of the U.K. on a few occasions.  Farmer does represent a step-up for Tennyson who doesn't really have any notable fighters on his resume.  Tennyson's last loss came in 2016 when he was stopped by Ryan Walsh but since that loss he's gone 6-0 with five knockouts, and that power will be something Farmer has to be very careful with.

This fight really comes down to the power of Tennyson against the output and skills of Farmer.  Look for Tennyson to try and get inside and really punish the body of Farmer in an attempt to slow him down.  If Tennyson can connect to the body early and often he will be able to slow Farmer's legs, making him an easier target.  If he goes to the body early then Tennyson could have Farmer in serious trouble in the later rounds.  For Farmer, he needs to stay light on his feet.  He can't afford to sit in the pocket and trade heavy leather with Tennyson.  Farmer needs to be very busy with his jab in order to keep Tennyson at the end of his punches on the outside.  Expect Farmer to really pump his jab, followed by plenty of straight left hands and a lot of movement.

PREDICTION: James Tennyson has the power to stop Tevin Farmer.  We could see Tennyson break Farmer down and stop him late.  Farmer is a tough customer though and his skills and hand speed are superior to Tennyson's.  As long as Farmer fights intelligently he will win this fight by the way of majority decision.
