Fortuna vs. Granados Fight Preview

FRISCO, Texas -- The opening bout of Showtime's June 16 tripleheader will be a 10-round affair from the junior welterweight division.  Facing off in that opening fight will be the power-punching Javier Fortuna (33-2-1, 23 KOs) and the always tough Adrian Granados (18-6-2, 12 KOs).  This fight will be especially interesting because neither fighter can really afford a loss.

Fortuna sticking his opponent with a straight left hand
Fortuna is a southpaw from the Dominican Republic who has legitimate one-punch knockout power.  His jab isn't something opponents really have to worry about but he does have an excellent straight left hand.  Fortuna likes to let his hands go and does good work on the inside where he likes to sneak in uppercuts.  He also likes to bang his right hook to the body and when he catches an opponent on the chin with his left it often ends the fight.  Defensively Fortuna is suspect though and often gets caught with his hands down.  There is no denying Fortuna's offensive talent though and his nickname of 'El Abejon' or 'The Bee' is fitting because of his quick hands and aggressive style.

In Fortuna's last fight he lost a heavily disputed split decision to Robert Easter Jr.  In the second round of that fight Fortuna was deducted a point for hitting behind the head and had that point not been taken away the fight would have ended in a split draw.  Certainly Fortuna hopes for a rematch with Easter but first he has to take care of business against Granados.  Fortuna has come a long way from his days of fighting on Friday Night Fights where he scored highlight reel knockouts, most notably his first round knockout of Miguel Zamudio.  He also has wins over Omar Douglas and Bryan Vasquez but took a bad loss while defending his title against Jason Sosa where he was knocked out late with a big lead.

The record of Granados may not look pretty, but he is a tough out for anyone.  Granados burst onto the scene when Amir Imam chose him as his opponent in what was supposed to be a stay busy fight.  Granados was dropped early in that fight and it looked like a short night for Imam.  Granados never packed it in though and ended up stopping Imam in the eighth round.  While he does have a lot of losses on his resume he always seems to lose to top opponents, having dropped fights to Shawn Porter, Adrien Broner, Felix Diaz, and Frankie Gomez to name a few.  What's really impressive is that Granados has fought all those top opponents and he's never been knocked out.

Granados celebrating his stoppage of Amir Imam
Granados is an orthodox fighter with good power and a huge heart.  His best attribute is his toughness and the fact that he never quits on himself and never stops gunning for the victory.  Granados usually stands right in front of his opponents and he likes to work on the inside.  He puts in good work to the body and has a nice left hook and right hand, although his jab isn't much to worry about since he usually just walks in, often behind no jab at all.

This could be a very dangerous fight for Fortuna.  If he hurts Granados early and tries to finish him, he could punch himself out and get tired later in the fight where Granados could come alive.  Look for Granados to try and make this a tough inside fight where he can bang the body of Fortuna and wear him down and punish him late.  In this fight Fortuna needs to use his superior hand speed to keep Granados on the outside where he can really let his power punches fly.  Whoever controls the distance in this fight will probably come out the winner.

PREDICTION: Javier Fortuna has one-punch knockout power but Adrian Granados has never been knocked out.  Granados has been knocked down though and he will taste the canvas in this fight but he won't be knocked out.  Instead Fortuna will have enough of a lead on the cards to get the unanimous decision victory.
