Magdaleno vs. Dogboe Fight Preview

PHILADELPHIA -- Headlining a deep card on ESPN on April 28 will be a WBO junior featherweight title fight between champion Jessie Magdaleno (25-0, 18 KOs) and challenger Isaac Dogboe (18-0, 12 KOs).  Making things that much more exciting is the fact that both of these younger fighters will enter the squared circle without ever having lost a fight, which means someone's zero must go.

Magdaleno landing a straight left hand
Magdaleno is a young southpaw who has shown good power throughout his career.  Along with that power Magdaleno also has fast hands and his best punch is his straight left hand.  Magdaleno uses his jab as a measuring stick for that left hand but with his hand speed he should make it more of a weapon.  Along with his straight left hand Magdaleno also has a solid right hook and when he has his opponent in trouble he always goes for the finish.

Finishing Dogboe is certainly something Magdaleno hopes to do, especially after Dogboe's father, who also works as his trainer, said that his son would beat Jessie, made reference to Donald Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico, and said that when his son wins they would present the title belt to Trump as a gift.  Beating interim champion and the undefeated Dogboe would be a nice win for Magdaleno in his second title defense, especially since he doesn't exactly have an eye popping resume, with his best win coming over a faded Nonito Donaire.

Dogboe fights out of Ghana but actually spent a good chunk of his early career fighting in the United States.  Still, when a fighter has spent the majority of his career fighting in Ghana you have to take their record with a grain of salt.  Ghanaian fighters are known to be tough and many of them have heavy hands but often due to lack of many top opponents they lack top tier skills.  Dogboe should be fresh though considering he already fought in 2018, scoring a technical knockout win over the very tough Cesar Juarez.

Dogboe landing a short left hook
The 23-year-old Dogboe is an orthodox fighter with some pop on his punches, however, he won't be the heavier handed fighter when he steps in the ring with Magdaleno.  While Dogboe doesn't have the fastest hands he does have a good short left hook and a heavy right hand.  One thing Dogboe likes to do that won't be a good idea against Magdaleno is fighting with his back against the ropes.  Even if Dogboe feels comfortable there, Magdaleno could make him pay.

This fight has the recipe to be really good.  Both fighters are young, undefeated, heavy-handed, and neither will want to suffer the first loss of their career.  It probably wasn't smart for Dogboe and his team to give Magdaleno extra motivation because Magdaleno already has heavier hands and is the more skilled fighter.  Neither Magdanelo or Dogboe has been down as a professional so this fight could go the distance, but if it does that will mean both fighters have eaten plenty of heavy leather.  Look for Dogboe to try and counter with his short left hook off of the ropes while Magdaleno will look to fight from the outside where he can measure Dogboe with his jab and tee off with his straight left hand.

PREDICTION: Jessie Magdaleno has sharper skills than Isaac Dogboe and more power.  Add to that the extra motivation he was given by Dogboe's father's ignorant comments and this should be a very good fight for Magdaleno.  Look for Magdaleno to pull away in the middle rounds and stop Dogboe in the ninth round.
