Davis vs. Cuellar Fight Preview

NEW YORK -- A pair of former champions will face off April 21 on Showtime with each looking to win a vacant WBA regular junior lightweight title.  Gervonta Davis (19-0, 18 KOs) will look to get back on track after missing weight and being stripped of his IBF title last year.  Meanwhile Jesus Cuellar (28-2, 21 KOs) looks to rebound from his 2017 loss to Abner Mares.

Davis dropping Jose Pedraza
Despite not being as big of a name as he probably should be at this point, and missing weight in his last fight, Davis is still a star on the rise.  In early 2017 he really announced his presence when he scored a technical knockout win over Jose Pedraza to capture his first title.  Now, with his name being mentioned as a possible opponent for Vasyl Lomachenko, Davis will need to take care of business against Cuellar.

Davis is a solidly built southpaw who likes to use the shoulder roll his promoter, Floyd Mayweather, perfected.  What makes Davis so dangerous is that he does everything well.  He's good, although not great, defensively and carries good power in both hands.  Davis has a quick jab that has some pop on it but his most dangerous punches are his heavy left hand and devastating right hook.  In recent fights though Davis has relied on that power too much and hasn't been as active as he should be, much like Adrien Broner.

Cuellar is also a power punching southpaw who likes to mix things up.  The Argentine slugger likes to use his jab as a measuring stick to set up his massive overhand left and he loves to walk opponents down.  Along with that left hand Cuellar also has a big right hook that can drop opponents and once he has an opponent hurt he doesn't waste any time going in for the kill.

The former featherweight world title holder has impressive wins over Juan Manuel Lopez, Vic Darchinyan, and Jonathan Oquendo.  However, he lost his most recent fight to Abner Mares and followed that up by night fighting at all in 2017.  After that yearlong layoff Cuellar will be moving up in weight for the Davis fight.

This should be a good action fight since both fighters pack plenty of punching power.  Cuellar is the more aggressive of the two, while Davis likes to counter punch off his shoulder roll.  Since the punch output of Davis has dipped recently, Cuellar should look to pounce on him early and not let up.  For his part, Davis shouldn't simply rely on his excellent power.  Instead he should keep Cuellar on the outside with his solid jab and measure him for power punches.

PREDICTION: Both fighters should give a good account of themselves in this fight.  However, Gervonta Davis is more skilled defensively and has slightly heavier hands.  Because of that he will prevail against Jesus Cuellar by the way of 10th round stoppage.
