Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN Quick Pick

Pablo Cesar Cano vs. Fidel Maldonado Jr.: On Saturday night the rematch between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward should be getting most of, if not all of, the hype.  That doesn't mean those fighters will be the only ones in action though because there are two other fight cards that night.  One of those cards will be another Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card and it will be headlined by a 10-round bout between Pablo Cesar Cano (30-5-1, 21 KO) and Fidel Maldonado Jr. (23-3-1, 19 KO).  The fight will take place in the junior welterweight division and both fighters really need to start stringing some notable wins together.  In his last 10 fights Cano has gone 5-4 with one no contest but two of those losses came against notable opponents in Shane Mosley and Paulie Malignaggi and his last fight was a win over the always tough Mauricio Herrera.  In Maldonado's last 10 fights he has gone 7-1-1 with one no contest but he hasn't fought the save level of opposition that Cano has over the same stretch.  Both pugilists really need to string a series of impressive wins together if they hope to get to the next level of their careers.  Cano is a 27-year old fighter who works out of the orthodox stance.  He uses his jab pretty well but it isn't a punch he will control rounds with.  Behind the jab Cano throws a nice left hook and a decent right hand and he is the type of fighter who likes to stand and trade.  Cano doesn't use his feet very well but he will change angles on the inside so he isn't just a flat footed slugger.  Maldonado is 25 years old and he fights out of the southpaw stance so if this is a phone booth style fight fans could see plenty of head clashes.  Maldonado likes to work behind a solid jab and straight left hand and at times, especially on the inside, he will also throw a pretty good right hook.  On Saturday Maldonado will be the smaller man but he hits harder and is usually a busier puncher.  This should be a close fight but the difference will be the higher punch output of Maldonado and because of that he will get the split decision win.
