Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Unlike most weeks in 2017 last week wasn't jam packed with plenty of fights.  Big Time Boxing only covered two fights but both of them proved to be very good.  The biggest of those fights took place in the hometown of Kell Brook, Sheffield, England on Showtime.  Brook defended his IBF world title against rising star Errol Spence Jr.  For Brook it was a chance to prove he was fully recovered from his stoppage loss to Gennady Golovkin.  While for Spence it was his first true top tier test and he was looking to prove he belonged in the conversation of best welterweights.  The early rounds of the fight were very even and probably favored Brook but Spence never got dismayed and stayed the course, making sure to consistently attack the body.  Despite being buzzed a time or two in the middle rounds eventually Spence started to take over and he really started to pinpoint Brook's left eye which began swelling badly.  In the 10th round Spence was able to drop Brook whose eye continued to swell.  Then, in the 11th round with Spence really taking over Brook took a knee to protect his eye and told the ref he could not continue.  It was probably a smart decision for Brook to protect his eye and it was a tremendous performance from Spence who is now on his way to the top.

  • The other fight last week was also on Saturday night and aired on beIN Sports Espanol.  The main event of that card featured action fighter Orlando Salido and Aristides Perez.  It wasn't supposed to be much more than a stay busy fight for Salido but like most of Salido's fights this wasn't an easy one.  Salido is always in fantastic action fights and on Saturday he had to get off the deck in the third round.  After getting dropped Salido, who definitely showed some ring rust, began to go to work and landed some very heavy shots on Perez.  After a seventh round that saw Salido land some good shots Perez decided not to come out for the eighth round, giving Salido a needed victory.
