Weekend Wrap-Up

  • On Saturday night in an HBO main event Terence Crawford continued his perfect ways.  Crawford took on Felix Diaz who entered the fight as a one-loss fighter but left with his second defeat.  Diaz is very talented but outside of landing a few heavy right hooks early in the fight he really wasn't able to mount much of an attack.  As the rounds wore on Crawford really began to dominate Diaz and finally after the 10th round his corner did the right thing and stopped the fight.  Crawford is in need of a big name opponent but fans may see him against Julius Indongo next in the summer.  Also on that card was a fight between Raymundo Beltran and Jonathan Maicelo.  Beltran was fighting for more than just a win because if he proves he is a special athlete he could be granted a green card, something he has been waiting a long time for.  Well Beltran looked spectacular on Saturday and had no issues with Maicelo.  In the first round Beltran hit the canvas and it was ruled a knockdown although it clearly wasn't.  Then in the second round Beltran caught Maicelo with a perfect left hook that dropped and stopped Maicelo.  That single punch gave Beltran the win, a candidate for Knockout of the Year, and possibly even his green card.

  • Also on Saturday night was a Showtime card that started in the evening and featured a total of four fights.  One of those fights featured rising star Gervonta Davis taking on the undefeated Liam Walsh for Davis' IBF title.  Well, Davis showed once again that he is a fast rising star in the sport as he badly hurt and then finished  Walsh in just the third round.  Also staying undefeated and taking care of business was Rances Barthelemy.  Barthelemy took on Kiryl Relikh and both men would hit the deck during the fight,  Barthelemy in the fifth and Relikh in the eighth.  Still, many felt that Relikh actually won the fight but nevertheless Barthelemy was awarded the victory in what was a very close fight.  Gary Russell Jr. continued to impress on that card as well.  Russell took on Oscar Escandon and dropped him in the third round before finishing him off in the seventh.  It was another impressive win for Russell who know just needs to stay active and challenge some big names.  The most drama filled fight of the night though took place between Andre Dirrell and Jose Uzcategui.  The fight was close with both men looking solid but early in the fight Uzcategui was warned for hitting after the bell.  Then in the eighth round Uzcategui threw a combination right at the bell with the last punch dropping Dirrell.  The ref disqualified Uzcategui for hitting after the bell which gave Dirrell the victory.  If that wasn't enough drama the uncle of Dirrell, Leon Lawson, entered the ring and threw a sucker punch that caught Uzcategui clean on the chin and snapped his head back.  Lawson is now wanted by police and should be banned for boxing for a very, very long time.

  • Saturday was a very busy night and a PBC on Fox Sports 1 card was also televised.  That card featured David Benavidez taking on Rogelio "Porky" Medina in the main event.  It was a very good action fight with Benavidez showing off his power and Medina showing off his toughness and heart.  Unfortunately for Medina though that wouldn't be enough as he was dropped in the six, seventh, and eighth round, the last of which ended the fight keeping Benavidez's perfect record intact.  Another unbeaten fighter in Jorge Lara was also on that card taking on Mario Briones.  Lara wasted no time in that fight, dropping Briones twice in the second round before ultimately finishing him off in the third.

  • Last week's action started on Thursday night with another Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card.   Headlining that card was Diego De La Hoya, the cousin of Oscar De La Hoya.  De La Hoya took on Erik Ruiz and the fight was never really in question.  The superior skills of De La Hoya were on display as he worked his way to a very wide unanimous decision win, keeping his perfect record intact.  The co-feature bout showcased another unbeaten talent in D'Mitrius Ballard who took on Adrian Luna.  Luna was dropped in the second round and while he was able to finish the fight on his feet he wouldn't win it as Ballard got the close unanimous decision victory.
