Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There was no bigger fight last week than the one between heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.  It was supposed to be the fight that determined how good Joshua could be and if Klitschko had anything left after a terrible showing against Tyson Fury.  Well Joshua showed how good he is, dropping Klitschko in the fifth round and then getting off the deck himself a round later.  He was badly hurt and actually was hurt multiple times in the fight but in the 11th round he caught Klitschko with a savage uppercut that hurt the former champion.  Joshua followed up, dropping Klitschko twice on his way to a stoppage victory.  However, even in defeate Klitschko showed he has something left and unlike usual was actually pleasing to watch.

  • One of the other fights last week was between Ramon Alvarez and Omar Chavez, the bothers of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.  That fight was a rematch of their 2014 bout which Alvarez won by the way of unanimous decision.  Things were much different this time around as Chavez stopped Alvarez in just the second round.  Now on Saturday night their brothers will headline a huge pay-per-view card as Chavez looks to add another win against an Alvarez while "Canelo" looks to enact revenge for his brother.

  • On Saturday night the PBC aired a card on Fox Sports 1.  It was headlined by Carlos Zambrano and Claudio Marrero and on paper it looked like it would be an even fight.  However, when the bell rang it was anything but close as Marrero ran right through Zambrano on his way to a first round stoppage victory.

  • Other fights last week included one between Casey Ramos and Miguel Beltran.  They headlined a card on UniMas and both fighters were looking to turn their luck around as each of them was fresh off a loss.  It may not have been the prettiest of fights with both fighters being cut during the action but when all was said and done it was Ramos who came away with the very close unanimous decision win.

  • The action began last week on Tuesday night when the PBC aired a card on Fox Sports 1.  The main event of that card pitted Carlos Molina up against Levan Ghvamichava.  Despite his best efforts Molina just couldn't do enough to get the win over the busier and stronger Ghvamichava who won the fight by the way of unanimous decision.
