Weekend Wrap-Up

  • So far 2017 has been jam packed with fun fights.  Last week was a slower one but still had plenty to keep fans happy.  The biggest card aired on Saturday on ESPN2 and was the second card of Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN.  Headlining that card was a fight between Antonio Orozco and KeAndre Gibson.  Both fighters were looking to take the next step in their career but it was Orozco who will move on.  It was clear that Orozco was in control from the start and he was able to drop and stop Gibson in the fourth round with a right hand.  The opening bout of that card featured Mercito Gesta taking on Gilberto Gonzalez.  Gesta boxed well while mixing in power shots while Gonzalez, bloodied for much of the fight, never stopped throwing bombs.  Gonzalez caught Gesta a few times but didn't do enough as the slicker Gesta was able to win the fight by the way of unanimous decision.

  • Saturday's other fight card aired on beIN Sports Espanol with Cesar Juarez headlining against Eugene Lagos.  Juarez usually makes for a fun fights because of his very aggressive style and he showed that style against Lagos.  In the third round Juarez threw a wide right hand to Lagos' body and when Lagos dropped his hands to block it Juarez launched a massive left hook that dropped Lagos like a bullet.  It was a scary knockout as Lagos remained in the canvas for several moments and it will certainly be a candidate for the 2017 Knockout of the Year.
