Weekend Wrap-Up

  • While the bout between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia on CBS may not have produced the fireworks some would have liked, it was a match-up of two undefeated fighters in their primes and on free TV.  That has to be viewed as a positive for the sport, especially since the fight did good ratings.  As for the action, it was Thurman who got out to a quick start as he buzzed Garcia a few times in the early rounds.  As the rounds wore on though Garcia started to shift the momentum, much like he did against Lucas Matthysse.  This time around though Garcia would not be aided by an opponent's badly swollen eye.  Despite scoring some of the late rounds it was too little too late for Garcia and when the scores were announced it was Thurman who was awarded the split decision victory.  Although it clearly should have been a unanimous decision in Thurman's favor he still unified the WBC and WBA titles and he can now make a case for being a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter.

  • Also on that CBS card in prime time was a fight between rising prospect, now contender, Erickson Lubin and Jorge Cota.  The fight was expected to be a showcase for Lubin who is much more skilled than Cota and it turned out to be just that.  The 21-year-old controlled the early rounds and in the fourth he closed the show in style.  With Cota backing up to the ropes, Lubin squatted down and when he arose he threw a sneaky overhand left that caught Cota flush and sent him sprawling to the canvas.  Even though Cota was able to beat the count it was clear that he was in bad shape so the referee waved off the fight, giving Lubin the victory and a title shot.

  • The only other fight last week aired on beIN Sports Espanol.  That fight pit veteran Yazmin Rivas up against Nazly Maldonado.  Rivas entered this fight fresh off her one-sided loss to rising female star Amanda Serrano so she needed to look good and look good she did.  Rivas controlled the fight from start to finish while Maldonado was never able to mount much of an attack.  When the final bell sounded and the scores were read Rivas won every single round on every single card, giving her the very wide unanimous decision win.
