Antonio Orozco vs. KeAndre Gibson: On Saturday night the undefeated Antonio Orozco (25-0, 16 KO) will
look to continue his unbeaten streak against KeAndre Gibson (16-0-1, 7 KO).
Both men are looking to secure their first title fight, but Orozco is
definitely the better prospect. This fight will be the main event of the
second Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card and it is scheduled to go 10 rounds from
the junior welterweight division. Orozco, the favorite, is an orthodox
fighter with solid power. He isn't an overwhelming puncher but he can certainly
get an opponent's respect. He likes to use his jab to set up a stiff
straight right hand but he can also score with the jab. Usually Orozco
makes for good action because he is a come forward type fighter who likes to
trade leather. Along with the straight right hand, Orozco also has a
solid left hook but he would be better served if he went to the body more,
especially on the inside. Orozco will bang the left hook to the body but
if he mounted more of a sustained attack down low it could help him score more
knockouts later in fights. In this fight Gibson will have a height and
reach advantage against Orozco. He too works out of the orthodox stance
but he carries less power than Orozco does. Not only will Gibson have the
height and reach advantage in this fight but he will also hold the hand speed
advantage as well. Gibson has a snapping jab and a quick left hook and
occasionally will throw a right hand but tends to work the jab and left hook
more often. If Gibson is going to win this fight he will need to stay on
the outside where he can use all of his advantages. He is the longer
fighter with faster hands so look for him to jab and move while also trying to
catch Orozco with left hooks on the way in. For his part, Orozco will need
to rough things up on the inside and do a good job of cutting off the ring.
While Orozco has faced better fighters than Gibson, he will be Gibson's
toughest opponent to date. Gibson will get off to a fast start and will
put some early rounds in the bank but eventually Orozco will start to catch him
and he will win a close fight by the way of majority decision.
Mercito Gesta vs. Gilberto Gonzalez: The co-feature for Saturday's card on ESPN will feature one fighter, Mercito Gesta (29-1-2, 16 KO), looking to get another title shot. Gesta will be taking on the heavy-hitting Gilberto Gonzalez (26-3, 22 KO) in a fight scheduled to go 10 rounds from the junior welterweight division. Gesta fights out of the southpaw stance and has an aggressive style. He doesn't jab much and instead relies on his right hook and wild right hand to do damage. However, at times Gesta will throw a straight left hand and that may be his best punch. Also, when he has an opponent hurt or is confident he really likes to let his hands go and the punches will fly without much thought to return fire. That lack of defensive mindedness could hurt Gesta against a big puncher like Gonzalez. Gonzalez is an orthodox fighter and he will have a noticeable height and reach advantage over Gesta. Gonzalez doesn't have a very good jab and tends to be a little too flat footed but he does have plenty of power. The best punch Gonzalez throws is his left hook and at times he will switch to the southpaw stance so he can really get a lot behind the left. Often, when he gets an opponent hurt he will switch to southpaw while looking for the knockout. Gonzalez's problem is on defense where he has been knocked out twice in three career losses and doesn't use his feet well at all. This should be a fun, if sloppy fight where either fighter could get stopped at any moment. While Gonzalez has more power his defense is also worse. Gesta is the more skilled of the two but sometimes gets over aggressive which should give Gonzalez plenty of opportunities to counter and drop him. However, it will be Gesta doing the dropping in this fight as he gets the better of the action on his way to a ninth round stoppage victory.
