Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Although last week lacked any high profile fight cards there was plenty of good action to go around.  Without a doubt the best fight of the weekend was the main event of the latest edition of Showtime's ShoBox: The New Generation card on Friday.  That was a fight between Ivan Baranchyk and Abel Ramos and it resembled a real life "Rocky" movie.  Baranchyk was dropped in the third round but was able to come back and drop Ramos later in that same round.  Ramos would again go down in the fourth round and at times it looked like both fighters were on the verge of being stopped.  However, somehow both Baranchyk and Ramos were able to make it to the final bell and when the scores were announced it was Baranchyk who was awarded the unanimous decision win.  In a great fight like that though neither fighter really losses and Ramos should find himself back on television shortly.  While it is still early in the year the fight is already a contender for the 2017 Fight of the Year.

  • Friday's other card was a PBC on Bounce TV card headlined by a bout between Robert Easter Jr. and Luis Cruz.  Easter was the heavy favorite entering the fight, and showed why over the course of 12 rounds.  Easter was able to control the action with his long jab and stiff straight right hand and Cruz could never really mount a sustained attack.  Late in the fight Easter stepped on the gas and dropped Cruz in each of the final three rounds but Cruz showed a ton of heart by beating the count each time despite having seemingly nothing left in the tank.  Heart wouldn't be enough for Cruz to be victorious though as Easter was awarded the well deserved unanimous decision win which saw him keep his IBF World lightweight title.  Also on that card was a very close fight title fight between Rau'Shee Warren and Zhanat Zhakiyanov.  In the opening round Warren dropped Zhakiyanov twice and it looked like the Kazakh fighter wouldn't survive the first round.  He never stopped coming forward though and after recovering quickly he started to put in some good work.  The fight remained very close for the remainder of the fight and when the scores were announced it was Zhakiyanov who was given the deserved split decision win.

  • Saturday's only notable fight aired on beIN Sports Espanol and was headlined by Antonio DeMarco.  DeMarco entered the fight on a three-fight losing streak and was in desperate need of a win against Luis Solis.  DeMarco dropped Solis in the second round and Solis also lost an additional point in the seventh round for holding DeMarco's head down during a clinch.  When all was said and done DeMarco got the win he needed by easily handling Solis by the way of wide unanimous decision.
