Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week was not a bountiful one in the sport of boxing.  There were only three fights in play, the first of the week being on Friday on Showtime.  That card on Showtime was a ShoBox: The New Generation card headlined by a bout between Adam Lopez and Daniel Roman.  While Lopez entered the fight as the favorite it was clear early on that no one told Roman that.  The early rounds were fairly even but Roman dropped Lopez twice in the fourth round and had him in trouble.  However, Lopez would rally back with a strong fifth round before Roman pulled away again.  After being warned by trainer Ronnie Shields that he would stop the fight if nothing changed that is just what happened as Shields would throw in the towel, giving Roman a ninth round stoppage win and a shot at the WBA title.

  • Saturday's action took place on beIN Sports Espanol.  That card was headlined by a fight between Anabel Ortiz and Brenda Ramos and the experience of Ortiz really showed.  It wasn't a total blowout but it was clear who the better fighter was and Ortiz was able to run her winning streak to 14 in a row after beating Ramos by the way of unanimous decision.  Also on that card was a fight between Emmanuel Navarrete and Dennis Contreras.  Contreras entered the fight having lost four of his last five fights and things didn't go much better for him against Navarrete.  Navarrete controlled the action and stopped Contreras late in the sixth round.
