Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week may have not had any elite fighters in action but the next two weeks will be jammed packed with top level fights.  The most recognizable fighter in action last week was top prospect Jose Ramirez.  Ramirez headlined a card on UniMas where he took on Issouf Kinda on Friday night.  Ramirez was expected to win the fight and win it he did, by the way of sixth round knockout.  Ramirez appears to be ready to take the next step up in his career and he is certainly a name to keep an eye on.

  • Another prospect in action on Friday was Abraham Lopez.  Lopez headlined an L.A. Fight Club card presented by Golden Boy Promotions on Estrella TV.  Lopez is a prospect but at 29 years old he needs to make some moves, and quick.  Lopez took on Sergio Lopez and he dominated nearly every round of the fight, scoring a wide unanimous decision victory.  However, Lopez was never able to stop his opponent which had to be disappointing.

  • There was only one fight card televised in the U.S. on Saturday and that card aired on beIN Sports Espanol.  Headlining that card was a bout between Jorge Paez Jr. and Johnny Navarrete.  Paez was fresh off back-to-back losses and really needed a win, but unfortunately for him Navarrete came ready.  Like many of Paez's fights this one was close and it didn't go his way.  Navarrete got the close unanimous decision win, giving him his fourth win in a row.  Meanwhile Paez has lost four of his last five fights and his days as a televised fighter may be done.  Also on that card was a bout between Eduardo Ramirez and Edivaldo Ortega.
