2016 Round of the Year

Winner

Thomas Williams Jr. vs. Edwin Rodriguez: Round 2
Just like he did in 2015 Edwin Rodriguez once again finds himself as one part of the Round of the Year.  This time around his dancing partner was Thomas Williams Jr. and in typical fashion both men came out swinging for the fences.  The round started wildly with both men throwing mile wide punches, praying they connected.  Early in the round both men landed some heavy shots and the action went back and forth evenly.  About halfway through the round Rodriguez connected with a big right hand that hurt Williams and sent him into the ropes.  Only a few seconds later though Williams landed a huge right hand followed by a left hook that hurt Rodriguez.  After a lot more ebb and flow and with only seconds left in the round Williams caught  Rodriguez with an overhand right followed by a perfect left hook that sent Rodriguez to the canvas and ended the fight.  While the round didn't even last a full three minutes it felt like an eternity because both men took so much punishment and gave fans such thrills.

Runner-Up

Francisco Vargas vs. Orlando Salido: Round 6
The fight between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido is one of the top contenders for the 2016 Fight of the Year but their fight also produced the runner-up for the 2016 Round of the Year.  That round could have easily taken place in a phone booth because neither fighter took a step back for the entire round.  The body work in that round was brutal and Vargas did his best to mix in some head shots as well and he seemed to get the better of the exchanges.  While almost any round of this fight could have made the list it was the sixth round that produced some of the best and most constant action making it the best round of a fantastic fight,

Honorable Mention

Carl Frampton vs. Leo Santa Cruz: Round 2
Another fight that is in the running to be the 2016 Fight of the Year was the one between Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz.  From the start it was clear that this would be a special fight and the second round turned out to be the best of the bunch.  The action was just back and forth it was also very fast paced and both men put in plenty of great work.  While Santa Cruz was bigger and landing some heavy punches it was Frampton who had the faster hands and landed the higher number of punches.  That round not only had fans on their feet but set the tone for the rest of what would be one of 2016's best fights.

In the Running

Demond Brock vs. Jesus Gutierrez: Round 6
The fight between Demond Brock and Jesus Gutierrez may not have featured any big name fighters, or ones who will someday compete for a world title.  That doesn't mean that two lower level fighters can't turn in a great round of action though.  Brock started off quickly and landed some heavy leather on Gutierrez in the form of a left hook that landed cleanly both upstairs and down.  However, as the round wore on Gutierrez started to come on and land wild shots on Brock.  It may not have been the prettiest boxing you'll ever see but if hand fans standing in appreciation for two fighters leaving it all in the ring.

Ray Beltran vs. Mason Menard: Round 1
It isn't often that the best round of a fight is the opening round.  Usually fighters spend the first round or two feeling each other out but that wasn't the case when Ray Beltran took on Mason Menard because both fighters came out swinging.  Menard came into the fight with the reputation of being the big hitter but Beltran showed he was no slouch in the power department as both fighters stood toe-to-toe going at it.  While the fight only lasted seven rounds it was the opening round that was the best of the bunch.
