Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Without a doubt the biggest fight of the weekend took place in the light heavyweight division between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward on HBO pay-per-view.  The fight was supposed to name the new pound-for-pound king but after a very close fight, and somewhat controversial decision, that may no longer be the case.  Kovalev started fast and dropped Ward in the second round.  For a moment it looked like Kovalev might make quick work of Ward but Ward showed his heart and stayed in the fight.  In the late rounds Ward put in some good work but while Kovalev's jab landed like a straight right hand, none of Ward's punches even dazed the Russian.  At the end of the night Ward was award the incredibly close unanimous decision win but many fans don't think he did enough to take Kovalev's belts.  Hopefully for fans a rematch is in the near future.

  • Also on that card was prospect Maurice Hooker taking on veteran Darleys Perez.  Many people thought that it was Perez who put in the better work but the judges were not so decisive.  When the scores were announced one judge had Hooker winning, one had the same score but for Perez and the third had it a draw.  That draw makes the third of Hooker's career, usually a bad sign for young fighters.  Another bout on that HBO pay-per-view card featured undefeated prospect Oleksandr Gvozdyk taking on veteran Isaac Chilemba.  Chilemba had never been stopped in his career but was forced to end that streak late in the fight, keeping Gvozdyk's record a perfect one.  The opening bout of the night was between Curtis Stevens and James De La Rosa.  Both fighters needed the win and it was Stevens who got it.  During the fight Stevens looked like he might stop De La Rosa but that stoppage never came.  Instead Stevens settled for the unanimous decision win.

  • On Friday night before the big fight on Saturday, Estrella TV aired an L.A. Fight Club card presented by Golden Boy Promotions.  The main event of that card feature veterans Mauricio Herrera and Pablo Cesar Cano.  Both fighters needed a win to keep their name relevant but for Herrera that didn't go so well.  Herrera, the more skilled fighter was outworked by the heavier handed Cano who worked his way to a clear split decision victory, a victory that would have been a majority decision for Cano had he not been deducted two points for low blows.
