Weekend Wrap-Up

  • If it wasn't clear already let's set things straight, this October has been and will continue to be horrible.  Fall has started and Halloween is around the corner but there is no high level boxing action and fight fans are already dreaming about November.  However, there are still fights to talk about and one of those fights happened this Saturday on beIN Sports Espanol.  That fight was headlined by Juan Francisco Estrada as he moved up in weight to take on Raymond Tabugon.  Most expected Estrada to easily handle Tabugon and while he was never able to seriously hurt him he did cruise to a wide unanimous decision win where he won every round on every official scorecard.  Also on that card was a fight between Emanuel Navarrette and Martin Casillas.  Like in the main event there was a clear favorite in this fight and that was Navarrette who went on to beat Casillas by the way of unanimous decision.

  • Friday was a bit busier than Saturday with two fight cards on the schedule.  One of those fight cards aired on Estrella TV with Diego Magdaleno in the main event taking on Art Hovhannisyan.  The fight was a bloody one that saw both fighters suffer cuts but Magdaleno would prevail, cruising to the unanimous decision win.  Magdaleno has lost both of his step up fights before and while this fight was definitely not a step up it was a win that could put him back in the mix for a title shot at some point.

  • Friday's other card aired on Telemundo and that fight was headlined by boxing's first openly gay fighter, Orlando Cruz.  Cruz had won four fights in a row heading into his rematch with Gabino Cota and those four wins included two knockouts.  Cota was the second of those wins and now he will also be the fifth as Cruz knocked him out in the seventh round.  The knockout was set up by a beautiful uppercut that badly hurt Cota.  When Cruz followed up it only took a few punches to end the fight.
