Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There wasn't much in the way of big name fights last weekend, at least not any big names being televised in the United States.  There was still some action though with the most well known fighter of the weekend Donnie Nietes.  Nietes took on tough veteran Edgar Sosa and was masterful in dispatching his opponent.  Not only did Nietes control every round but when the official scores were announced all three judges had Nietes pitching a shutout.  That card, which aired on beIN Sports Espanol on Saturday, also featured a fight between Mark Magsayo and Ramiro Robles.  Magsayo, a young Filipino prospect, had no problem handling his Robles and he dropped him in the second and seventh rounds.  Despite getting dropped twice Robles was able to make it to the final bell but Magsayo won the fight on the cards with a wide unanimous decision.

  • On Friday night the only action that took place was on Showtime when they aired another ShoBox: The New Generation card.  That card was headlined by a fight between Travis Peterkin and Radivoje Kalajdzic.  From the start Peterkin did not look good and it appeared as if something was off.  Kalajdzic seemed to notice that too because he took control early and never really had to worry about anything Peterkin did.  In the fifth round with the fight clealry one-sided, Peterkin got dropped twice, the second of which ended the fight giving Kaladjzic the impressive win.  Also appearing on that card was slugger Ivan Baranchyk.  Baranchyk and his heavy hands took on Zhimin Wang.  Wang proved to be one tough customer because he took everythign Baranchyk had and not only did he never appear hurt but he never stopped trying to win the fight.  Despite his effort it was Baranchyk who put in the better work and he was awarded the unanimous decision win for it.
