Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week's action began on Tuesday night with a PBC card on Fox Sports 1.  The main event of that card was a bout between Caleb Plant and Juan De Angel.  Plant entered the fight as a young, undefeated prospect and that status hasn't changed.  Plant never got the knockout he was looking for but he did drop De Angel in the fourth round and cruised from that point on to a wide unanimous decision victory.

  • Saturday night was a busy one last week and on Spike the PBC aired a tripleheader that was headlined by Robert Guerrero.  This was an important fight for Guerrero who was coming off a loss to Danny Garcia because another loss would have fans calling for his retirement or relegate him to veteran gatekeeper status.  Well Guerrero lost to David Peralta, who had actually been working as a cab driver before scoring the biggest win of his career.  Now Guerrero is 2-3 in his last five fights and as expected some fans have called for him to hang up his gloves and call it a career.  Also on that card was another fighter in desperate need of a win, Alfredo Angulo.  Pre-2011 Angulo looked like an absolute beast who was borderline indestructible.  However, his career post-2011 has not been very good and he is 5-5 in his last 10 fights.  Angulo took on Freddy Hernandez and was aggressive as always but also slow and seemingly shot worn.  While the fight wasn't a blowout it was another loss for Angulo as Hernandez got the unanimous decision win.  Like Guerrero fans are not calling for Angulo to retire.  The young fighter on this card was Terrell Gausha who was looking to stay perfect and beat Steve Martinez.  While it was certainly far from the performance he was hoping for Gausha was able to get the majority decision win over Martinez to keep his perfect record intact.

  • UniMas also had a card on Saturday night, that one headlined by a fight between Miguel Marriaga and Guy Robb.  Both fighters entered the bout with one career loss each but it was Marriaga who would be the better man that night.  Robb did put in some good work and caught Marriaga clean on multiple occasions but Robb lacks heavy hands and it showed.  Meanwhile, Marriaga who does have good power was able to take control and stop Robb in the sixth round.  Also on that card was a fight between Jose Felix Jr. and Robert Frankel.  Frankel was brought in to this fight as an opponent who could make Felix look good and that is pretty much how their fight went down.  Frankel never really had Felix in any trouble and the talented young power puncher was able to stop Frankel in the sixth round.
