Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last week wasn't a great one for boxing because there wasn't much going on.  Although to be fair it is probably a smart thing not to schedule big fights while the Olympics are taking place.  Because of the last of action that meant that the biggest fight last week featured the infamous Antonio Margarito taking on Ramon Alvarez, better known as "Canelo's" brother.  The two men fought on beIN Sports and the bout lasted all of the scheduled 10 rounds.  Early on Margarito looked good but later in the fight Alvarez was able to consistently land punches to Margarito's surgically repaired eye.  However, when the scores were announced it was Margarito who came away with the split decision win.  Now rumors have surfaced that Margarito could face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez next but let's all hope that fight never happens.  Also on that card was a bout between Pedro Campa and David Bency.  That fight was scheduled to go 10 rounds but only lasted seven because the undefeated, and heavy hitting Campa stopped Bency and now remains perfect.

  • On Friday ESPN aired another PBC card and the PBC fights that have aired on the network this summer seemed to resemble Friday Night Fights, a program many boxing fans wish ESPN would bring back.  The main event of that card was a bout between Miguel Flores and Ryan Kielczweski.  The fight was a close one, and the lack of power from Flores was really evident.  Yet at the end of the night Flores was able to keep him perfect record and status as a high level prospect intact as he beat Kielczweski by the way of unanimous decision in a close fight.  Also appearing on that card was Jamal James who took onYordenis Ugas.  That fight would also go the distance with James winning a unanimous decision in a wider fashion than Flores was able to.
