Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The most important fights of last week took place on Saturday night on Showtime.  On that card was a bout between Badou Jack and Lucian Bute.  Jack was looking to cement his place near the top of the super middleweight division while Bute was looking to stay relevant and look good.  Jack looked very sharp early and really put a hurting on Bute's body.  In the middle round Jack continued to control the action with his superior boxing skills.  However, in the later rounds Bute started to come on and as Jack slowed down a bit Bute was able to put in some nice work.  Still, Bute was beaten handily for most of the fight which made the scores seem very strange.  One judge scored the fight 117-111 for Jack but the other two judges somehow managed to give Bute six rounds, making the fight a majority draw and leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth.  Also on that card was a fight between James DeGale and Rogelio "Porky" Medina.  Most expected that DeGale would simply out box and out slick Medina but Medina never got that memo.  The underdog came to win and he put in some great work during the fight, especially downstairs.  DeGale meanwhile looked a bit off and he barely used his jab all night.  Yet DeGale was able to land a high percentage of punches and was very accurate all night.  The scores all went in DeGale's favor but Medina certainly gave a tremendous effort.

  • Also on Saturday night was a PBC card on FOX.  The main event of that card was a rematch five years in the making between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz.  The first fight was an instant classic which Ortiz won by a close unanimous decision.  This fight started similar to the first in that Berto was dropped early.  Berto did not look good to start the fight while Ortiz looked like the fighter many fans hoped he could be.  Ortiz's good fortune wouldn't last though.  In the fourth round Berto dropped Ortiz and had him badly hurt.  Moments later he unloaded a flurry of punches that sent Ortiz down again.  Ortiz was clearly out of it and he barely made it to his feet.  When referee Jack Reiss asked him if he wanted to continue Ortiz offered no response and Reiss waved the fight off, giving Berto his long awaited redemption.  Also on that card was a banger between Thomas Williams Jr. and Edwin Rodriguez.  Both light heavyweights have been known to start fast and both also have questionable chins.  When the fight started both pugilists came out swinging with little regard for their own safety.  Rodriguez appeared to be hurt in the opening round but came back nicely in round two.  In that same round Rodriguez had Williams hurt but with just seconds left in the round Williams caught Rodriguez with two massive punches and despite Rodriguez making to his feet the fight was waved off giving Williams the win and possibly a shot at Adonis Stevenson.

  • Last week's action started on Friday night when both Andre and Anthony Dirrell were on action on the same PBC on Spike card.  Andre was in the main event against Blake Caparello and just like in his last fight against James DeGale he was dropped in the second round.  From there though the fight was all Dirrell.  He was able to use his hand speed and movement to out box Caparello and when the final bell rang and the scores were announced Dirrell was named the unanimous decision winner.  Little brother Anthony appeared in the co-feature of that card and he took on Caleb Truax.  However, the younger Dirrell did not need to work as hard as his older brother.  Dirrell dropped Truax twice in the opening round, the first time from a few beautiful straight right hands and the second, which would end the fight, from a straight right hand and a left hook.
