Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Although two of the best fighters in the sport were in action last weekend is was a pretty quiet week for the sport.  The highlight of the week came Saturday night on HBO when both Gennady Golovkin and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez were in action in separate bouts.  Golovkin, the number four ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the sport according to Big Time Boxing took on Dominic Wade in a complete mismatch.  Wade was down in the very first round and two knockdowns in the second round would put a halt to the fight.  Golovkin remains undefeated but he will soon face some serious backlash if he can't get another top fighter to enter the ring with him.  Gonzalez, the number two ranked pound-for-pound fighter according to Big Time Boxing took on McWilliams Arroyo who survived all 12 rounds but didn't offer much resistance after the first few rounds.  Gonzalez is in a similar position to Golovkin in that he needs a big name to go up against.

  • Last week's action started on Tuesday when the PBC returned to Fox Sports 1.  That card was headlined by a fight between Ivan Redkach and Luis Cruz.  If Redkach was hoping to get a title shot his fight on Tuesday isn't going to help things.  In the second round Redkach was dropped with a straight right hand from Cruz but he was able to rebound late.  In round eight Redkach caught Cruz with a short left hand to the chin that sent Cruz to the canvas, and he would also find himself there again in the ninth round.  However, neither fighter ever really took control and when the scores were announced it was ruled a split draw.
