Weekend Wrap-Up

  • The biggest name in action last week was Andre Ward who officially moved to the light heavyweight division and took on Sullivan Barrera.  It was clear early on that Ward was the better fighter and he dropped Barrera in the third round.  Throughout the course of the fight Ward constantly got Barrera to bite on his feints and despite taking a few clean punches upstairs, more than fans may be accustomed to, Ward looked as sharp as usual.  The reason this fight was a big one was because Ward doesn't fight often and if he keeps winning a showdown with Sergey Kovalev isn't too far off.  Also on that card was top prospect Joseph Diaz who had a tough test against Jayson Velez.  Diaz showed that it may be time to consider him a contender as he handled Velez fairly easily and won a wide decision on the judges scorecards.

  • On Friday Showtimes brought fans another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.  While the opening bouts all were exciting the only 10-round bout of the evening was the main event.  That fight saw Regis Prograis take on Aaron Herrera and he was looking to move to contender status after already being a top prospect.  Prograis looked excellent, scoring a first round knockout of Herrera.  The way that Prograis set up the knockout punch was impressive also.  He caught Herrera with a straight left hand on the chin that hurt him and while he was retreating Prograis flashed another straight left upstairs so Herrera would raise his guard then unloaded with a right hook to the body that ended the fight.

  • Also on Friday was a card on Estrella TV.  That card was headlined by a fight between Antonio Orozco and Miguel Acosta.  Orozco was looking to remain undefeated and he did just that, stopping Acosta in the very first round of their scheduled 10-round fight.  The co-feature also ended with a knockout when Andrew Cancio stopped Hugo Cazares in the third round.
