Weekend Wrap-Up

  • There were only three fights in what was another quiet week in boxing.  The first action fight fans got was on Tuesday when Jamel Herring faced off against Luis Eduardo Flores on Fox Sports 1.  The fight was a complete shutout as Herring controlled the action early, and late.  In the fifth round Flores was dropped twice but managed to survive and finish the fight on his feet.  That was really the only victory for Flores who only won one round on one judges scorecard and lost a very wide unanimous decision to Herring.

  • The weekend's other fights aired on beIN Sports Espanol.  In the main event of that card Fernando Carcamo took on Daniel Echeverria.  Echeverria had only one loss to his name and was known as a big puncher who had not faced a lot of quality opposition.  Unfortunately Echeverria's punches often come in wide and Carcamo took full advantage of that.  In the corner Echeverria let loose with a right hook and was about to follow it up with a left hand when Carcamo caught him.  Carcamo who is an orthodox fighter briefly moved into the southpaw stance and caught Echeverria with a counter overhand left that sent Echeverria sprawling to the canvas.  While Echeverria barely beat the count the referee ruled that he couldn't continue, giving Carcamo the knockout win.  The co-feature on that card was a bout between Julio Barraza and Edson Ramirez.  It was a close fight throughout and Barraza was able to work his jab nicely but Ramirez was landing the much heavier punches.  When the scores were announced two of the judges had it a draw while the other saw it for Ramirez which means the fight ended in the always disappointing draw.
