PBC on FS1 Quick Pick

Jamel Herring vs. Luis Eduardo Flores: While the men's 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team did not do well in the Olympic games they have all done well as professionals.  Many of them, most notably Errol Spence Jr. and Joseph Diaz, have regularly found themselves on television and some have even headlined cards.  Now it will be Jamel Herring's (14-0, 8 KO) turn as he headlines tonight's PBC on Fox Sports 1 card.  Herring will be taking on Luis Eduardo Flores (21-2, 17 KO) in a 10-round fight in the lightweight division.  At 30 years old Herring is still only a prospect because he spent time serving as a Marine and saw action in Iraq.  Now the southpaw looks to rise in the ranks of the lightweight division.  While Herring's resume isn't all that impressive he did beat tough veteran Yakubu Amidu in his most recent fight.  Herring has shown a stiff jab so far in his career and with that he also carries along a solid straight left hand.  The best punch for Herring besides his nice looking jab is his short right hook and although he doesn't carry much power on his punches he will keep opponents honest with that check right hook.  Flores doesn't have a high level resume either and his toughest opponent to date was Miguel Berchelt.  That fight turned out very well for Flores when he was able to stop Berchelt in the very first round although some felt the stoppage was premature.  Flores is an orthodox fighter who has a long crisp jab but he tends to throw everything else fairly wide.  Flores like to throw a crooked right hand and often bangs it to the body but that punch comes in very wide and he tends to leave himself open for return fire when he throws it.  The left hook of Flores is a dangerous weapon and is definitely his best punch.  That left hook, which he will sometimes throw as a counter, is the punch that knocked out Berchelt and is the punch Herring needs to be weary about.  This fight will be a battle between boxer and puncher with Herring playing the role of boxer while Flores fills the role of puncher.  Herring is a very tall lightweight at 5-feet 10-inches and that height could help him stay on the outside and use his jab to control this fight.  As long as Herring can avoid the left hook of Flores he will box well enough to win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.
