Weekend Wrap-Up

  • It wasn't a very busy week of boxing and it wasn't a very exciting one either.  The one fight fans were most looking forward to was the rematch between Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal.  Pascal had made waves during the press conference by calling Kovalev a racist and during the entire lead up to the fight Kovalev seemed sincerely angry with Pascal.  Come fight night it was all Kovalev.  He started the fight off nicely and Pascal was never able to get anything going.  Whenever Kovalev landed a power punch, which was whenever he wanted, Pascal looked as if he didn't want to be there.  Before the fight Kovalev said he wanted to punish Pascal, and he did just that.  Instead of going in for the kill when Pascal was in bad spots Kovalev kept pulling back which only allowed him to beat up Pascal round after round.  After the sixth round Pascal's newly hired trainer Freddie Roach wanted to stop the fight but Pascal talked him into letting him go out for one more.  Nothing really changed and after the seventh round and that is when Roach decided enough was enough, giving Kovalev the seventh round stoppage victory.

  • During Sergey Kovalev's post-fight interview he referred to Adonis Stevenson as Adonis "Chickenson" which prompted Stevenson to charged the ring and do his best to act like he wanted a piece of Kovalev.  Some of Stevenson's team held him back while he yelled at Kovalev but most people saw it as an act considering Stevenson could have made a fight with Kovalev happen on many occasions.

  • The co-feature for the HBO card headlined by Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal was a bout between Dmitry Mikhaylenko and Karim Mayfield who took the fight on short notice.  The fight was a stinker as Mikhaylenko controlled every round on his way to a unanimous decision win in which two of the official judges scored it a shutout for the Russian fighter.  While the fight was a boring one Mikhaylenko is a talented fighter and should look better against less awkward opponents.

  • Also on Saturday was a fight on UniMas, headlined by talented prospect Jose Felix Jr. who was taking on the seven-loss Ricky Sismundo.  The fight was close throughout and Felix was lucky to escape with the split decision win.  In the sixth round Sismundo was deducted a point for hitting after the bell and that point would be the difference.  Had the penalty not been enforced the fight would have ended in a split draw.

  • On Friday night highly touted prospect Julian Ramirez took on Christopher Martin on Estrella TV.  The fight was never really in question, and no one ever really expected it to be.  Ramirez controlled the fight throughout and his punches were very sharp, especially late.  When the scores were announced Ramirez came away with the unanimous decision win with one judge scoring it a shutout for him and the other two giving him nine of the 10 rounds.
