HBO Latino Quick Picks

Pedro Campa vs. Aaron Herrera: On Saturday night boxing will be back on HBO Latino with a pair of fights.  The main event will be a bout between Pedro Campa (18-0, 14 KO) and Aaron Herrera (29-3-1, 18 KO) and it is scheduled to go 10 rounds in the junior welterweight division.  While Campa has an impressive record he has never faced any notable fighters and there are more than a few tomato cans on his resume.  Meanwhile, Herrera has faced some notable opponents like Selcuk Aydin but he hasn't usually done very well in step up fights, even if the step up isn't all that big.  Campa is an orthodox puncher who relies on his solid chin to allow him to stand in front of opponents and trade heavy leather.  While Campa does have a bad habit of walking straight in without throwing a jab he has gotten away with that because of the level of his opposition.  Campa usually throws his punches very wildly but when they land they do damage.  The young fighter has a good left hook to the body but his best punch is probably his overhand right.  Herrera is also an orthodox fighter and he will have the faster hands in this fight.  Much like Campa, Herrera is not adverse to standing and trading punches but he moves slightly better than Campa does in the ring.  Unlike Campa, Herrera actually uses his jab and that will be helpful in this fight.  Herrera also does a nice job of turning his left hook over quickly and he likes to use his right hand when he gets in close.  This fight really comes down to distance.  Campa is the bigger puncher and he likes to rough things up in the pocket, if Herrera can use him jab to keep him at bay he should be able to get in some good work because of his faster hands.  Herrera has quicker hands and has fought at a higher level and both will help him win this fight by the way of unanimous decision.

Sullivan Barrera vs. Karo Murat: The co-feature for HBO Latino's Saturday card will be an IBF light heavyweight title eliminator.  Sergey Kovalev holds that IBF belt and the two men competing for a chance to take it are Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11 KO) and Karo Murat (27-2-1, 17 KO).  While the Cuban Barrera, now living in Miami, has never faced any notable opposition outside of the washed up Jeff Lacy, Murat has.  Murat has fought Gabriel Campillo twice, Nathan Clevery, and lost a wide unanimous decision to Bernard Hopkins back in 2013, a fight many fans will remember because referee Steve Smoger decided to give Murat a slap to the face when he wasn't listening to his instructions.  Barrera fights out of the orthodox stance and he has a jab that keeps opponents honest.  While Barrera is an accurate puncher he does not have top end hand speed so from the outside his punches take awhile to land.  Barrera is better when he fights from the pocket and he can shorten up his left hook and bang it to the body.  From the outside his best punch is his straight right hand but he isn't as slick as many of his Cuban countrymen.  Murat is also an orthodox fighter and while his idea of defense is putting on his earmuffs until his opponent is done punching he does find some offensive success from the pocket.  On the inside Murat likes to let his hands go and his has a good left hook.  Murat also likes to throw uppercuts when he is in the pocket and they could find a home on Barrera's chin since the Cuban often fights with his hands low.  This is an interesting fight because it will be a step up fight for Barrera but no one is sure how big that step is.  Murat has been in the ring with the better competition but he hasn't looked great in those fights.  This fight should take place at close range and the slower hands of Barrera will be the difference as Murat will be able to land more punches and win a close fight via split decision.
