Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Last weekend was an exciting one in the boxing world and no fight was more exciting than the one between Edwin Rodriguez and Michael Seals on Spike TV.  Rodriguez was the big favorite coming and and he jumped all over Seals at the beginning of the 1st round.  Rodriguez dropped Seals early and the fight didn't look like it would last very long.  Then Seals turned the tables and dropped Rodriguez twice, the second of which left Rodriguez badly hurt.  Luckily for Rodriguez there wasn't much time left in the round and he survived.  In the 2nd round Rodriguez took back control and dropped Seals again.  From there it was all Rodriguez and he would drop Seals again in the 3rd round, sending him flailing to the ropes and ending the fight.  The 1st round of this fight is certainly a contender for Round of the Year and the fight itself should be in contention for Fight of the Year.

  • The co-feature of Spike TV's card was a bout between Thomas Williams and Umberto Savigne.  Both fighters like to throw power punches and have questionable chins to going into the fight it looked like it would be an exciting one, and it was.  Both Williams and Savigne tasted the canvas in round 1 and then in round 2 Williams dropped Savigne again and ended things when he got him in trouble in the corner and unleashed a flurry of punches.  While this fight should end the hopes of Savigne at being a top fighter it didn't do much for Williams either.  It is clear that Williams will never be at the top of his division but when he is on TV he is extremely entertaining.

  • There was also another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation last weekend and the main event didn't disappoint.  The fight pitted Frank Galarza against the unknown Jarrett Hurd.  It became clear early that despite his inexperience Hurd was the real deal.  He was faster and sharper than Galarza all night and started to really put a beating on him in the middle rounds.  Things ended in the 6th when Hurd caught Galarza with a combination started with an uppercut that sent Galarza stumbling and when he turned his back to Hurd the referee ended things giving Hurd the win.

  • The first fight of last week came on Tuesday on Fox Sports 1 when Alejandro Gonzalez took on Karim Guerfi.  Gonzalez had made himself known when he dropped Carl Frampton twice in the 1st round of their 2015 fight.  Against Guerfi, Gonzalez would once again start fast and drop his opponent with a body shot in the opening round.  Shockingly Guerfi was able to make it to his feet and even more shockingly from the 2nd round on he dominated the fight.  Gonzalez may be the best 1st round fighter in boxing but it is all downhill from there.  Guerfi's quickness and movement was what led to his victory and he really impressed.
