Weekend Wrap-Up

  • When it came to Big Time Boxing's coverage last week there wasn't much going on.  The biggest name in action that was covered was Jermell Charlo who did what he was supposed to do, look good against a rapidly aging Joachim Alcine on PBC on NBC Sports.  Alcine did actually buzz Charlo once or twice but the fight was never in doubt and when Charlo dropped his veteran opponent in round 6 it look like things wouldn't last much longer, and they didn't.  Charlo caught Alcine with a few more punches the last of which forced the ringside doctor to get up on the canvas to wave off the fight just as the referee was waving it off himself.  The time is now for Charlo to step up because another Alcine-like opponent won't make boxing fans very happy.

  • The other notable fight on NBC Sports was the return of Tony Harrison.  Harrison is a heavy handed fighter from Detroit who had some people comparing his to Tommy Hearns before he was knocked out by Willie Nelson.  This was Harrison's first fight back from that knockout and he cruised to a wide unanimous decision win over Cecil McCalla.  But Harrison's biggest question mark is how his chin will stand up to top end talent and that questions remains as the light hitting McCalla was able to hurt him on a few occasions.  Harrison is still a talented prospect but his defense needs work.

  • The other fight that Big Time Boxing covered was a disappointing one.  The bout between Jose Zepeda and Jose Alfaro was supposed to be a slugfest.  Instead it was a fight that never really got started.  In the very 1st round Zepeda was cut under his left eye by a clash of heads and at the end of the round the ringside doctor put a halt to things, making the fight a no contest.
