Weekend Wrap-Up

  • On Saturday night on HBO rising star Terence Crawford was in action this weekend but that action was very one sided.  Crawford fought Dierry Jean and won every round of the fight before ultimately stopping Jean in the 10th round.  Along the way Crawford dropped Jean three times, the first three times he had ever been down in his career and the stoppage loss was the first he had suffered.  Rumors are starting to swirl that Crawford's next fight might be against Manny Pacquiao which could signal a changing of the guard.

  • There were two high level prospects in action this Friday on Estrella TV.  They were Joseph Diaz and Frankie Gomez who fought in separate bouts on the same card.  Diaz fought tough competitor Ruben Tamayo and absolutely smoked him, cementing his status as one of the best prospects in the sport.  Diaz won via unanimous decision and all three judges had it the same, 100-90 for Diaz.  For his part Gomez took on Jorge Silva and looked solid after a long layoff.  Gomez's trainer Freddie Roach said in an interview that Gomez will be his next champion and that may be true if he can get his act together outside of the ring.

  • Showtime had another edition of ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday and that card was headlined by Rob Brant and Louis Rose in what was supposed to be a toss-up type fight.  It ended up being just that.  The fight was back and forth for much of the 10 rounds and while Brant was the more accurate puncher it was Rose who was throwing the higher number of punches which always makes things interesting for the judges.  When the scores were announced no one could complain as the judges had it 95-95, 96-94, and 96-94 for Brant, scores that were as close as the action had been.
