Weekend Wrap-Up

  • Most boxing fans never thought that they would see Lucas Matthysse quit, especially against a light hitting Viktor Postol.  After making it through wars with Danny Garcia and Ruslan Provodnikov certainly Postol couldn't stop "The Machine."  He did though, Postol totally controlled Matthysse with his jab and movement and finished things off with a 10th round knockout.  It wasn't just a knockout though, Matthysse could have beaten the count, he simply chose not to.  Following the fight Matthysse said he heard a pop when Postol caught him on the left eye with a straight right hand, the same eye Garcia so badly damaged and that was why he didn't try to beat the count.  While Matthysse's stock took a serious hit in this fight, Postol's couldn't have risen any higher.  The man who many thought Matthysse would knock out ended up stealing the show and could now find himself in more big name fights, like one HBO's blow-by-blow man brought up after the fight against Terence Crawford.

  • Saturday night was an example of a growing problem in boxing, competing cards.  Both HBO and Showtime put on cards featuring big names at roughly the same time.  While HBO rolled with Lucas Matthysse, Showtime are a fight between Adrien Broner and Khabib Allakhverdiev.  Broner easily controlled the action before referee Harvey Dock mercifully stopped things in the 12th round.  That win may not have totally redeemed Broner but it will keep him fighting at a high level for the foreseeable future.

  • The co-features for both the HBO and Showtime card had two things in common.  The first thing being that each fight had a young fighter taking on a veteran.  The second thing was that both fights ended in controversy with bad decision by the judges.  On Showtime Jose Pedraza eked out a split decision win over Edner Cherry in a fight many had Cherry winning.  Then on HBO Antonio Orozco beat veteran Humberto Soto by a wide unanimous decision when it looked like it would end in a draw or with either fighter winning by the slimmest of margins.  On Saturday night boxing showed fans two things they are tired of seeing, competing cards and incompetent judging.

  • On Friday night on Estrella TV Brazilian prospect Patrick Teixeira stopped gatekeeper Don Mouton in the 7th round of their 10-round fight.  While Teixeira still has a long way to go before he can start competing against the top of the junior middleweight division he has a few things going for him, like very long arms, and a willingness to trade heavy leather.

  • Last week's action actually started on Tuesday night on Fox Sports 1.  Rising talent Javier Fortuna took on Carlos Velasquez and absolutely dominated.  The fight was never in question and at times Fortuna was so confident in attacking that he actually took some decent return fire.  Still, Fortuna was able to control the action and eventually stopped Velasquez in the 10th round.  It was an impressive performance for the young Fortuna who definitely showed the influence that Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez had on him as a young fighter.
