UniMas Quick Pick

Magdaleno is set to go 10 rounds for the 1st time
Jessie Magdaleno vs. Vergel Nebran: The fight card most likely to get overlooked this weekend is the one on UniMas.  It isn't that the card is terrible but it will compete against the HBO PPV that most boxing heads will find a way to watch.  The main event of the UniMas card will feature 23-year-old rising prospect Jessie Magdaleno (21-0, 15 KO).  This will be Magdaleno's first 10 round fight and he will be going up against Vergel Nebran (14-9-1, 9 KO) in the featherweight division.  Magdaleno's older brother Diego got absolutely demolished last week so little brother will be trying to get a win for the Magdaleno family.  The younger Magdaleno is a southpaw with good power, although he isn't an overwhelming puncher.  He likes to stick the jab out but will often turn it over quickly into a good looking right hook.  With those punches Magdaleno also has a solid straight left hand and the ceiling looks very high for the young American.  Nebran definitely has an advantage when it comes to his experience level.  Even though Nebran only has a few more fights than Magdaleno he has faced the better opponents, most notable Cristian Mijares who he lost to earlier this year.  Nebran is an orthodox fighter who lets his lead hand drift away from his body which gives him a short jab he uses often.  Nebran also has a decent left hook and a versatile right hand.  On the inside Nebran will throw uppercuts and crooked punches with his right hand and from the outside he will throw it as a straight punch.  Despite his experience level Nebran won't be able to beat Magdaleno who is a legit prospect that will win this fight with a 9th round stoppage.
