truTV Quick Pick

Seanie Monaghan vs. Donovan George: On Friday night Top Rank Inc. will put on another one of their truTV fight cards.  The card will be headlined by New York native Seanie Monaghan (25-0, 16 KO).  Monaghan will be taking on Donovan George (25-4-2, 22 KO) in a 10-round bout in the light heavyweight division.  Monaghan is an interesting case, he is an undefeated fighter and when he fights in and around New York he usually brings a lot of fans with him, yet he has still been unable to secure a big name fight or a title shot and at 34 years old the time to strike needs to be now.  Monaghan has been on a Top Rank truTV card before and was very impressive, after that performance it seemed like a big name would be next.  Instead he found himself on the non-televised portion of the fight between Nicholas Walters and Miguel Marriaga against Fulgencio Zuniga.  Monaghan started off quickly but faded late in that fight, he was able to stop Zuniga in the 9th round but the stoppage came after Monaghan clearly hit Zuniga with a rabbit punch.  Zuniga was able to make it to his feet but once he stood up completely he took a knee and shook his head, unable to continue.  At this point in his career Monaghan can't just win, he needs to impress so he forces himself into bigger fights.  Monaghan is an orthodox fighter with a solid jab and a pretty good left hook.  While he has some pop on his punches he is a knockout artist and instead breaks opponents down.  Monaghan is really a one-handed fighter because he rarely uses his right hand and while his defense isn't great it has allowed him to avoid tasting the canvas as a professional.  As for George, he is also an orthodox fighter and he has serious power.  Don't expect to see George jab much, he likes to focus on power punching.  That power is most evident in his right hand and he can drop opponents with a straight right or an overhand right.  His left hook is also a dangerous weapon but he definitely gets wild in the ring.  Also, George hasn't done very well against top fighters and he has recent loses to Edwin Rodriguez and Adonis Stevenson.  George has also lost to Caleb Truax and fought to a draw against David Alonso Lopez.  In his past 10 fights George hasn't looked great and his record is 5-3-1 in those fights with the 10th bout being ruled a no contest because George failed a drug test when he used an anti-inflammatory prescription for pain relief and failed to disclose it to the commission beforehand.  This should be an exciting fight and one that could see Monaghan lose his perfect record.  George can end a fight with one punch and he will be looking to do just that on Friday night.  However, George tends to get very wild and Monaghan is a patient fighter and has never been down as a pro.  If Monaghan fights intelligently and uses the clinch at the right times he will win this fight via unanimous decision.

Brad Solomon vs. Ray Serrano: The other fight on truTV's Friday night card should be more of a chess match than the main event will be.  That is because neither Brad Solomon (25-0, 9 KO) or Ray Serrano (21-2, 9 KO) have any real power.  Solomon is in a similar position to Seanie Monaghan who will appear in the main event, he is an undefeated fighter but he hasn't had any big name fights and he is already 32 years old.  His opponent Serrano has had two notable fights against Karim Mayfield and Emmanuel Taylor, both probably B-level fighters but both were able to knock him out.  Solomon is an orthodox fighter with a good jab and a nice straight right hand.  He will also throw a left hook but it is more to score points with and not a punch with much on it.  Solomon has a strange fighting style because he keeps his lead hand low but he often hops up and down and seems to have a nervous energy in the ring.  Serrano is also an orthodox fighter and he is 3-inches shorter than his opponent.  While Serrano has a decent jab he will often gets his hands in bad defensive position and he does not take punches well at all.  Lucky for him though Solomon isn't much of a puncher.  What Solomon is though is a bigger fighter with better movement and those attributes will allow him to remain perfect and beat Serrano by the way of unanimous decision.
